JDOGG's 1987 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Hey everybody my name is Jeremy I'm 17, I reside in San Diego, CA. I'm a senior at Audeo Charter school. I like to ride my bike and go fishing a lot. I like to do photography and go to the desert also.

My dad and I have a 2wd single cab 1987 Toyota pickup. About 5-6 years ago my dad replaced the 4 speed transmission with a 5 speed transmission. About 2 years ago we replaced the 400,000+ stock 22r with a rebuilt 22r from a 1995 pickup. When we first got the new motor in and running it would make this really loud grinding noise and we narrowed it down to being the starter, my dad fixed the problem but with him fixing that problem another came. The truck now drains oil. What could cause this? This motor only has about 6000-7000 miles on it.

Should we just replace every gasket and pretty much redo the whole motor again?

I will post pics of this truck tomorrow with more info.

A little more about the truck
First off this truck has been through a lot it was both my cousins first vehicle. it first had a 3 inch body lift on it when my cousin Andrew had it and then about 2 years after that my cousin Dougie got it and he slammed it, rolled the fenders everything in his words " its might tight JDM" in my words "its a waste of a perfectly good truck." then my dad got it and and it was raised back up to stock height, 15" rims on it and a little bit bigger tires. then we replaced the motor and then me and my dad went and did a bid for a bathroom remodel and a guy in a brand new lifted 4x4 ford ranger started his truck across the street but he started it in reverse which i guess launched him into the drivers side of the truck. the Toyota got put up onto the curb and the rim got bent a little and the door got smashed. So we went to the junk yard a couple of days later and found a blue drivers side door for a 1988 Toyota pickup (so you don't have to hold the handle when you shut the door) we replaced it and closed the hole on the pillar. We then changed the now red and blue truck into a flat black truck. We just used spray paint, when I get some money I'm going to do a rustoleum paint job.

My outcome of this vehicle is to make it completely stock so when my 2 year old cousin is 16 it can be his.

A list of a couple things I know the truck needs before it is even ready to be driven again:
New brakes all around
New clutch
New rims and matching tires all around
New paint (lots of surface rust)
Take care of the small rust hole in the bed
New bench seat
new windshield

A couple of things I want to do to it:
New front and rear bumpers (possibly tube bumpers with some lights)
redo the drivers side pillar where all the bondo is.
Passenger tailgate handle
6k lo beam 4.3k high beam HID conversion
antenna delete
CB with PA (off-road use only)
air horn (off-road use only)
new speakers
new stock exhaust

Welcome to YotaTech Jdogg, I think it's time to ditch or trade the 2wd and since your in CA go out and get yourself a 4x4 Toyota truck or 4Runner that is rust free compared to the rusted ones here in the midwest...Maybe another Yotatech'r from this site out there in CA can help you find one. Good luck on what ever you decide!!!!

I plan to get the same size tires that are in the back for the front and then put a add a leaf in the back and just lift the front to even it out. So about 3-4 inchs all the way around, I don't want it to high hahaha.

light bar in the front
sr5 cluster swap
replace all the interior lights with LED lights
new seat
mag lite holder and other little stuff

ohhhh and another thing I plan to do is the door panels I want to reupholster them maybe with a cartoon or plaid theme or just go back to the stock tan.
I also want to paint the interior and rhino line the floor sense on the passenger side there is no heat shield because when i was like 13 i kicked a quart of oil over on accident and it started eating at the foam/heat shield stuff :/

I want to paint the truck stock Red or
Medium Blue (8A1) or maybe an olive green.

For everyday driving I enjoy driving my little 2 wheel. I put the 5 speed Celica tranny in it and it will get up and run for a little 4 banger. If yo do a little shopping around and not worried about jumping in there and doing it your self, you can make it into something.

Where is the VIN number on the transmission that i can look up to see which tranny my dad put in here?

I was also wondering if this kit would fix my oil draining problem?

I have not done a lot yet to the truck because I'm BROKE
but Yesterday I washed the Camry and the truck and then today I cleaned the rims on the truck (I had no idea they were chrome).

I think i have gotten some more ideas for the truck.

I'm going to start a small fund and put like 30 bucks in it a month and try to save up for a long travel front end. can any buddy recommend some long travel suspension companies for me.

I really like the body style of that one. Not so much as the price tag, but really think they are sharp.

Alright this thread is done.
I gave my key back to my dad today. my dad is one of those people that blames everybody else for his wrong doings. to make a long story short he dis owned me today for picking my grandmothers side and not his. so the truck is not part of me anymore. (this doesn't mean i will leave the forum and nevr own a yota again.) soon within the next year i plan to buy a truck after i get settled in with my own life.

But i have a question for everybody on yota tech and everybody else that reads this.

If your dad tells you he doesn't want you as a son anymore should you keep calling him dad or by his real name?
