Jaino's '92 Single cab build

Hey all! I'm starting another build thread to document my engine rebuild for a truck I recently purchased. June 24I bought another Toyota truck, a 1992 single cab 4 cylinder.
The truck is very clean for its age, its even got the stock Toyota deck!
Truck has 580000 right now with a bad headgasket; doesnt overheat, but slightly blowing white smoke when I drive it.

Overall purpose of this truck/ build will be for a comfortable and reliable DD, yet with a little offroad prowess added to the mix.

I am planning to get the engine rebuilt by 22RE Performance in Chico,CA. That is the first thing that I am currently doing. I really want to go with a Stage 2 build, but I am strapped for cash. If there is anyone that has done the Stage 1 and you're reading this, let me know how much power increase you got over stock. I have read a couple of threads about the Stage 2 so I have a little background knowledge on the Stage 2; I just cannot seem to find any info on the Stage 1 though.

First things first a little Toyta-in-the-dirt shot. lol

The truck came with a set of relatively new 31" Falken Rocky Mountains. IN my opinion these tires look way better than the BFG All TerrainsI recently painted the rims black and repacked my hubs with grease. Baby steps. haha

Almost forgot, I drove up to Chico yesterday and talked to Jim. Super laid back guy, awesome customer service. He made time to talk to me about what engine setup I should go with and that it would be a better idea for me to have him rebuilt my motor since it is an original block that hasnt been tampered with. I am planning to go with a stage 2 engine. I will be pulling out mine and dropping it off in about a month or so; trying to save up still. lol

A little progress on the tear down.

And this is how she sits right now.
Almost done with the tear down excpet the two tranny bolts on top, closest to the firewall. I also need an engine hoist and leveler. Hoping to pull the motor by next Friday. Its another week, but Firday is the only day that I am off. lol

A little update, got off on Thursday and went straight to Harbor Freight and bought an engine hoist. Got her assembled and ready for Fridays job.

Getting ready to pull out, double check everything!
I was in the process of rocking the engine, trying to get it to disconnect from the tranny and I realized there was a small ground wire that is boltedf from the firewall to the engine block.

Here it is pulled out and ready to be put on the stand.

Empty bay, I have a crap load to clean. by the time I get my engine back, the engine bay should be nice and clean!

Here it is, next Friday pulling pullys off and stripping it down then its to Putneys Custom machine she goes! Cannot wait.

As she sits until next Friday.
I will also be getting my intake manifold, injectors rebuilt. Along with that will be a a big bore throttle body, new OEM clutch and throwout bearing. Mind as well go all out. lol

A little update, I dropped the engine at Putneys today. Had a chance to talk to Jim more about the Stage 2. Awesome customer service again; I was able to tour his shop with him. He explained to me why he uses the parts he uses, and trust me, this guy knows what hes talking about.
Not only does he do 22re's he is also VERY familiar with the 2nd gen MR2's 3sgte! wow. Another amzing engine that Toyota made.

Any hoo, as I wait for my motor I will be cleaning all the brackets and whatnot, going to start scrubbing the engine bay tmo, make it nice and shiny. haha

Thanks man. I was just going to do the HG and timing chain, but at 500 plus thousand miles, I just told myself do everything one time and be good for another 500,000 mi. Hopefully everything is smooth sailing for you as well when you start your build.

Havent done anything to the truck except cleaning here and there. Just barely started cleaning the brackets and whatnot. Hand scrubbed the firewall and a little of the engine bay. I dont have a pressure washer so all the cleaning is done by hand. lol Anyways here are some pics of the engine bay. lol Nothing to brag about, but here goes anyways!

Got a little more done yesterday, cleaned and painted various brackets and the pulleys.

One thing I learned from my last engine build, was you have to stay organized. re-organized my work space as well. haha

Thanks GTB.

I know what you mean by the grandpa look, my gf also said the same thing with my previous truck until we went snow camping with the shell off. haha

Lets just say she shows much more appreciation for the shell now.
