Talking DirtyHarry460's '88 4Runner Build-up Thread

Hey YotaTech! This is my first build up thread and I hope you guys follow and enjoy it.

First a little truck history on myself.

My first truck was a 1977 Ford F-250 Ranger Crew Cab long bed. Fuel injected 460 with a 5 speed. I bought this truck shortly after i got my licence at 16. I paid 5500 for it and fixed her up. I will always remember and love this truck but as a teen age kid 4MPG was't the best for my small income.
here are some pics.

Then I decided I needed to downsize. My friend had a yota and I thought that would be perfect. So for 4000 I bought a 91 extra cab pickup. % speed 3.slow. Of course I absolutely loved it but the 3.slow let me down and died after about 9 months. The guy i bought it from said he did a full rebuild and such but he fried the rings by not doing a proper break in.

So then with the little money I got from the dead yota and the money i was saving for a SAS a sweat deal came up on a Suzuki Samurai. Loved it at first but hated it after a long winter. On paper it was a sweet deal and awesome rig but was no fun to drive or wheel. So I sold it this spring And made some money on it.

So with 7500 bucks in the bank I went shopping

I knew I wanted a a first or second gen pickup or first gen runner. No rust, miles didn't matter because I wanted a fresh 22re and tranny anyway. So after a few weeks a '88 4runner came up that fit my check list. So for 300 bucks had it shipped up to me. ( Maryland to Massachusetts) I paid 4000 for it. I know it was a little high on price but I didn't mind because it had what i wanted and I needed a truck asap.

So the runner:
240k miles about.
No rust
22re 5 speed
Grey interior
Perfect interior condition
NO RUST! which is unheard of around here
Came with a soft top.

Here she is!

So I have this for about 2 weeks now and love it! 1st gear and reverse don't like to work well when its hot but other than that she goes great.

So what I have done so far:

Swapped the stock gauge cluster for the SR5 cluster
Took spare tire off for relocation in the future.
Through the soft top on the paint and fix the hard top.
working on the sound deadening mod.
stereo system in progress

Parts on the way!
Coils for Zuk mod
add a leafs... Yes Zuk and AAL. Not sure how it will end up but I will let ya know!
All new sky jacker shocks.
4 285/75-r16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracks. And 4 black Summit racing D window steelies
TRD shift knob

So my plan for suspension is to see how the Zuk and AAL lift the truck then go and decide what to do with the front. BJ spacers, extended A arms maybe.

Future plans:

Paint job of course! Rattle can??? haha
front and rear tube bumpers
Regear if needed.
New 22re and rebuilt Tranny in the fall! YAY!
As many cheap mods as i can find!

So a mane reason I bought this is because next summer me and my girlfriend are going cross country and seeing everything we want and going until were out of money. So I have until next July to get this ready! Wahoo!

Thanks for Reading! Hope you all follow my thread and help me out hahaha!

Update! So I ripped out the interior somewhat because I still need to drive it. So the back seats and carpet is all out. As of right now I'm thinking about getting some carpet and padding from home depot and using that to insulate my truck. If anyone has thought or experience with this let me know It's so cheap I think it will be worth it.

Also I had some time to start prepping the hard top. As I was sanding down some rust on the window frame I hit some serious BONDO!
Both sides are pretty bad. I'm definitely not buying another one so I'm gonna bondo it the right way and not just cover up the rust. It amazes me that the whole truck is spotless and the hard top is wrecked. It must have been taken off and left on grass and moisture got in or something. Oh well haha here some pics.

Hey guys, I ran into a slight problem. I noticed in these past few days, its been really hot, that its been getting pretty hot. I know the reason but need a solution. My air condition radiators are in front of the motor radiator. And my main radiator isn't getting any air flow. at least i cant imagine it is. So i was wondering if i can relocate my ac radiators.

I would like to keep my ac but if it has to go thats fine. So if anyone has any ideas or experience with this let me know. Thanks

Hey sorry its been a while havnt had a chance to get to a computer. So ive done quite a bit since I last posted.

First I got a brand new 22RE! Wahooo!

Its a rebuilt one any way. I snagged it from a member on here. 22REFORME.

he was a cool guy and gave me a bunch of extra parts!
After market header
new exhaust with new cat and o2 sensor
Air flow meter
rear heater
EFI set up
and somemore

Here she is!

Also I got a new Trail gear rear bumper

I painted it today pictures up soon.

Also I got a little further on my sound deadening. I went with some cheap carpet padding. It was 10 bucks for a 12x8 piece.

Ordered some black alloy rims to go on my 33's. Pics later.

Stuck on my stereo tho. Cant get the wiring figured out on the deck. I know what all the wires are and where they match up but nothing everytime

Doing the Add a Leaf, Zuk mod and shocks this week.

More Updates Sooon!

You're making great progress, keep it up! Congrats on finding a rust free truck up here in New England.

Check the horn fuse for your radio. I found that with the horn fuse blown the hot radio wire went dead in my truck.

Yeah every time I work on the radio I blow the horn fuse, always forget to pull it, but still no sigar. I must just have wires mixed up. PITA haha

Another update

Got my bumper on and it looks sweet!

also got my new shoes on... also sweet haha

Did the rear suspension, ZUK mod, AAL, and new shocks.
Waiting for BJ spacers to come in to do the front. So its sitting very uneven now haha

The ZUK and AAL worked great together i got a ton of lift from it. A little stiff ride tho.

Finished sound deadening in the rear of the truck.

Switched my cargo and dome light to LED's. Very happy on how they came out.

Its been a really busy month for me. Im taking 18 credits of all math classes and a english class at my local community college so I've been swamped with school work and trouble with my yota! haha

So I installed my BJ spacers and new front shocks. Messed my alignment up horribly so i did the best i could to adjust it until i can get it one by a shop. It still sits high in the back but once i get the hard top on and all my gear in the back it should settle down.

Also i figured out my stereo wiring! still working on a good amp location tho.

So for the bad news. On my way to a concert with my girlfriend the yota died. luckily we had some friends near by to leave at there place until i got down there with a trailer. About 3 hours away.

Got it back home and figured out that the head gasket was leaking and the spark plugs got corroded from the burning antifreeze. So i swapped the plugs and im limping it around town trying to buy some time so that i can prep for the swap.

I planned on being able to get a new radiator, clutch, electric fan, and new transmission for the swap but money is tighter than i thought it would be at this point so that will all have to wait.

So this thursday i am going to get everything labeled and ready to swap it this weekend.
this is my first ever motor swap so i know im going to run into a million problems so any advice would be great!

so what im doing is just swapping the motor. Its just a new block. So everything attached to the old one is staying. Basically its only the block up to the head that is new.

Pictures soon of BJ spacers.
