Good idea except that it would be a lot of work to paint them, then scratch them, then oxidize them. LOL How about Hammertone Grey on the sliders and the rims?
I think any color grey would work.

Nice! Imagine your tires are close to mine in size, 32"?

How is the rpm on the freeway with these gears? What are you at RPM wise, at 60, 65, 70, 75? I will likely stay at 32 or 33 and want to re gear at some point.

Thanks!

They are Nitto 285/75r16 which according to the manufacturer are: 32.68" diameter and 11.34 wide.

According to Tirerack.com BFG All Terrain are: 32.8" diameter and 11.4" wide.

At 50mph, according to my speedometer, on the freeway, my GPS has me at 48.5mph. That is about 3% error.

Thanks for the speedo/gear info - the more I look into it, the more it seems like 4.88 is the best match for 32/33" tires.

Can you address the RPM differences you see at those highway speeds? Imagine you're revving higher in 5th gear at those speeds than with stock 4.10 gearing and larger tires, correct? I think I peg out around 3,000 now with 4.10s and my tires, at 65/70 MPH. Curious to know your fuel economy numbers/changes after the regear.

You are correct. I am reving about 3% higher than stock at any given speed.
3,000 rpm x 1.03 = 3,090 rpm or a 90 rpm difference
When I get a chance I will take her out onto the freeway and see how fast I am going at 3000rpm

I can cruse at 70 - 80 mph. I am now getting about 16.5 mpg mixed driving which is about a 1-2 mpg loss compared to 31" tires with 4.10 gears. I believe that the fuel economy loss is due to the size + weight of the wheels more than anything. Smaller tires and higher gearing (stock) should not have much affect until you are in 5th gear. Larger tires and higher gears (31" tires with 4.10 gears) have the most negative affect in first gears, but should actually give you a little better highway mpg than with smaller tires. Larger tires and lower gearing (33" tires 4.88 gears) bring the ratio closer to stock except for the wheel weight.

Thanks Matt for the explanation!

I'm getting around 17 MPG with 32s, a 4" lift and stock gears (though with a header....).

Would love to one day get 20 MPG

/back to your thread, sorry!

Did you do your road trip yet? How do you like the Aussie up front? I have heard different sides of the story that, when in 2WD, you can still feel the locker and it affects DD, even with the hubs unlocked. . What's your opinion on that?

Hey Steven,
With the hubs unlocked I cant tell that it is there. I love the set up because the front lockers only affect steering when the hubs are locked. I would like anyone who says that they can feel it with the hubs unlocked in 2wd to explain to me how they can feel it when the wheels are spinning independently on the front barrings and the front driveline is not engaged. I think that with ADD that the front driveline is engaged but I don't have ADD. Am I missing something?
I went on the trip and will post a few Pict's soon.
