Cool 87YotaPickup's '87 4x4 Pickup Buildup

I just purchased an 1987 Pickup with the 22r motor back in February. Getting ready to build up. Its in pretty good condition given the age. I will be posting pictures tomorrow when I get home from work.

The truck was burning a ton a few on the drive home, about 80 miles, so I found some cracked vacuum hoses. Replaced those and ordered a new head, timing chain, etc. Went to install new head and found that although my truck is an '87 the motor that was supposedly rebuilt (per the previous owner) was an '80-'84 model with the dome pistons. So called the people I ordered the head from and they said they wouldn't exchange because I pulled the head out of the wrapper, load a crap huh? Anyways I put the old stuff back on and it actually runs a little better but still has no power and idles rough.

New plan. Found a used '89 22r on craigslist, and I'm going to have the lower machined and rebuild with my new head. Going to find a used intake and order a weber carb and have this thing ready to just drop in.

Question for you guys. Anything that I may be missing? I'm going to do the EGR delete kit, screw that stuff. My truck has A/C and by the miracle of God it still works, incredible, but I lose ALL power, so I have to get to highway speeds and turn it on. Needless to say my wife hates it because of no A/C in town, ha. I'm basically trying to get the motor right so I have power no matter if I'm running A/C in town or highway or running it at all. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Hey guys, as promised I have included some pictures, a day late of course. My apologies. I thought there might have been somebody with some other ideas but no replies, maybe waiting on my pictures?

I think the truck is in pretty good shape body and frame wise. Only notable rust spots are on the passenger side rear fender well.

The grill was installed by the first owner and the lights installed (poorly if I may add) by the owner I bought it from. He had direct wire from battery to switch to lights with a inline fuse, great right? Sure but if you run the wire from the battery at the passenger front to go through the firewall on the driver side diagonally, draping on the motor, not so good.

This is the rear bumper installed by one of the previous owners. I plan on capping the ends off and pumping with air. No telling when you might need that.

The interior is not so bad. Need a new seat, those springs are shot. Very hard to find though.

These are pictures of the motor that is currently installed. 83-84 22r.

And finally this is a picture of the motor I just picked up not all complete but the main parts I need are there. Going to finish tearing down tomorrow and send to the machine shop this weekend. Hope they don't break the bank.

I'm still looking for the rocker arms, valve cover, oil pan, intake, exhaust, and studs for both intake and exhaust. Going to be a straight drop in when I'm done, carb and all. Does anybody have any idea what I can do for enough power for what I mentions before? Thanks again for all suggestions and help. Also looking for what size bolts are needed on the rear of motor to attach to engine stand? Thanks again.

I am not as familiar with the 22r as far as why you are having such a power loss. I will be out in the next day or so and see what size bolts I have for the engine stand. They arent cheap. Seems likek they were $6 a piece. I keep them on the engine stand so as not to lose them.

The power loss is in the head, put a 20r head on it,they flow much better.

Thanks Terrys87. OneIwilly, I have a brand new 22r head that I plan to use also plan on getting rid of that rat nest stock yota carb for a weber. Do you think that will get me the power back? I also thought about upgrading the a/c compressor to a much newer year model, thinking that maybe it will be more efficient and not take so much power when it is turned on.

No,the 22r head is a piece of crap as far as getting air in and out.Its just like on a sb chevy. All 350 bottom ends will make 400 hp.The difference between 190 hp and 300 is all in the heads. You can throw all of the carboration at it that you want, but if the combustion chamber cant get it in and out or the motor cant burn all of that gas, because of compression it dont mean squat.

The ac pump might get you one or two hp.There are 2 different 22r blocks only one will work with the 20r head. Its the shorter one you need.Google it there are tons of guys running it at auto x in rwd celicas.

Thanks for all the help guys. I tore down that used motor last night, looks pretty good not that much wear, should be going to the machine shop tomorrow. My back up vehicle busted a leak in the radiator, and had to patch that so didn't get that much time to take pictures. Will upload some tomorrow.

Here is the bolts I use. The top ones are about 1/2 longer then I would like. The 2 bottom ones dont really matter as the excess length can go completely thru. I have the 80mm. I woud be tempted to get 2 of the 70mm and 2 of the 80 mm.

Thanks for the pictures, Terrys87. I knew it was 12M but didn't know the the pitch. I did a search on here and found 12M with a 1.25p. So I will get the 1.75 and if they work then ok, if not then 1.25. Thanks.

Hoped to have more post about the truck. Just sent off the block to the machine shop so should have it back soon. My new question is, is there a list of bolt sizes for parts such as timing cover, oil pump, oil pan, etc.? Plan on having a straight change out with borrowing from the other engine. Thanks all.
