Hi first off I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this. I have recently purchased a 89' Toyota pickup V6 3vzfe. First Toyota I have ever owened and I have never enjoyed a vehicle so much. Well I was browsing through this site and I stumbled across some people talking about the head gasket's being recalled because they contained asbestos. I have done some searching about this on the general web and could not find anything about this recall. Is this just a rumor or just a keep on the down low so it won't give Toyota a bad name. If this is a true recall does my truck qualify or am I just wishing. If so what do I need or do I just take the truck into the Toyota dealership and ' poof ' new head gaskets. I appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you!

give you VIN# to the dealer, they can look it up and see if the recall applies or if it has already been done

Asbestos was involved, but only in the following sense. Asbestos had been used for its superior characteristics prior to the 3VZE design. But it was mandated out in the overly frenetic response to asbestos.

The replacement design HD's were not as good as the original asbestos design, and hence the recall.

That is the story as I know it. Might even be accurate.

Yours has probably been done, but the VIN# check is the thing to do.
