AxleIke: What gears are you running? 4.88? 5spd? 22RE?

I'm planning on re-gearing my 85 this year, but haven't decided for sure if I'm going to go with 5.29s or 4.88s. I'm leaning toward the 5.29s, since it is my trail rig and not my DD at this point.

That's pretty impressive that you didn't have to lift it to get 33's underneath! Looks Great!!! I rubbed with 31x10.50s at stock height. But the IFS front end is slightly wider than the Solid Axle. I also need to move my front axle forward. My 33's rub the pinch weld pretty bad. But they Look Good and they wheel Great! I ran the Marlin Crawler Round Up Rubicon run last summer.

But not quite.

Yes, I guess there would be very miniscule difference (as in 1x10^-100), but nothing that will warrant any changes in MPG on that factor alone. It's like saying folding in side mirrors will give you better MPG's. Maybe technically it's true, but it really has no difference in real world applications.

So what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of one tire size over the other? If the 31s just "look" better and the performance between the 30s and 31s is basically the same, then just because of budget I will get the 30s. I know I said yesterday that I had decided to get the 31s but a night of thinking has made me reconsider.

I'm feel the opposite;I've got 4 years and 40k on my Nittos and have never had an issue in the snow and they resist hydroplaning much better than the BFGs and that's obvious by it's much better defined water evac channels which are almost non-existent on the BFGs. Dry pavement handling and grip has also been better with my Nittos over the several sets of BFGs I've driven on over the last 15 years.

Off road tho' you simply can't bag on the BFGs and their lettering is the sweetest looking in the business but my next set will still be Nittos on my DD and will save me over $200 over the BFGs at Discount Tire.

But I do see you have the 15"ers which for some odd reason Nitto doesn't make that size so it is too bad for the smaller rim crowd since it is nice to have another solid option for an A/T tire.

So are there any big differences between the two sizes other than looks and minimal clearance advantages with the 31s?

high miles

may be a little late posting but i just replaced a set of BFG ATKO 91,000miles on 98 taco and they were still good (just replaced because i picked up a set of M/Ts for free). they were great. my wife runs 265/75 revos on 02 4runner, 70,000+ and still wearing well. also an awesome tire.
