There they are, fresh off the truck. Coopers new S/T Maxx in a 285/75r16.
First impression:
They are huge! Well, compared to the 255/85/16s they look huge.....I'm sure they'll fit, snugly.
They are heavy! 61 lbs each!

I'm digging the tread pattern, the siping, and the ArmorTec sidewall (which the ST did not have)

Measurements:
Tread is about 9 1/4" wide (that's about 2" wider than the 255/85/16 ST)

Total height is actually 32.5" and right now they are taller than my 255/85/16s by about an inch (but they have very little tread left)

Tread depth is right a 19/32.

I hope I like these as well as the original ST, which proved to be an excellent and true all terrain tire.....

when you say 255 are you refering to 255/85 16s?

Right now I'm not sure yet. These (with a whole 50 miles on them now) ride very nice and are quieter than the original ST. If they offroad as well as the original I will be quite happy - and if I can get 40,000 to 50,000 out of them!

how many miles did you get out of your 255s? I am thinking about the s/ts in 255/85. I like the tall and skinny

Loved the ST! Just wanted to try something new for now.

My first set of ST's I got 50,000 out of and my second set I got 40,000.

^i've seen the old STs on a couple plow trucks, so i'd assume they're pretty good. slap some studs on those bad boys and you'd be good to go!

looks like a lot of the tire manufacturers are finally starting to put out more aggressive ATs. Had these come out earlier I probably would have gotten them over the DuraTracs I'm running on my Cruiser.

I thought they did very well in the snow we get here in VA. Last year we had 8" of snow and the truck climbed out of our steep driveway easily, toured plowed and unplowed backroads without any issues or drama. I liked thema lot more than the BFG ATs I had before I got the ST's

Any reviews on these? Looking at the 285/70/17 for a 4th Gen 4Runner. Been running STTs on a 3rd Gen, but thought I'd go a little milder on the "new" one.

Needs extra siping, factory siping never does much compared to actual siping in a shop

Agreed! The old style ST's were OK until about half tread. I siped them after about 25,000 miles. The verdict is still out on these new ones, so far they seem better in the rain as new tires, but they don't have a lot of siping and I'll probably add more as the tires wear....

a little update. The Maxxs are wearing very well and evenly across. It's looking like I should be able to get 50,000 out of these if they continue to wear at the same rate they are now.

On the sand at Cape Lookout National Seashore they did very well. The gravel roads of the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont were handled nicely, nothing squirrelly in the curves. And the torrential rain has given a couple of opportunities to test their water shedding abilities (very good) No hydroplaning at speed, even in the standing water on the road....
Now if I could jusy get them muddier than I was able to at Rapidan WMU....

Just a quick update: I haven't had them off road lately, last time was the trip to PA for junior deer season with my daughter. There is a steep winding track that was muddy and the Maxx's just climb right up.
On road I have no complaints. The tires continue to run nice and quiet.
I don't have any issues with them in the rain, like the original ST the rears will spin a bit (or a lot) if your foot gets too heavy, or the tires have too much air pressure, or the road still has that early rain oil layer on it - or a combination of all the above.
They seem to be hydroplane resistant, hitting standing water at speed they shed water quickly enough to maintain control and give you a chance to go - whew! that coulda been worse!
They do seem to be wearing like iron. Original tread depth was (measured by me) 19/32" after 13,000 miles of mostly road (but enough sand, gravel and mud to like these treads) they've worn down to 16/32. Math time peeps.
19/32 - 16/32 = 3/32
175,000 miles - 162000 miles = 13,000 miles
13,000 / 3 = 4333 miles per 1/32 of tread wear!

if you drive these tires to their legal limit (3/32) that gives you a potential of 69,328 miles. [19 - 3 = 16/32; 16 x 4333 = 69,328]
even if you only like to use half the tread life (9.5/32) that gives you a potential of 41,163 miles. [19 / 2 = 9.5; 9.5 x 4333 = 41,163]

That's off road tire life I can live with!

so your old st's had wet traction issues on pavement? My sc may make that worse.

It wasn't really an issue with the ST's themselves, (there was never an issue with their handling of curves or stopping power) more of an issue with my right foot and the V8 engine.(if you're running an SC 'd V6 you're probably right there power-wise) If I ran a lot of pressure in the rear (40psi) there could be lots of wheelspin, lowering to a reasonable pressure (32psi) for an unloaded truck and wheelspin (hard acceleration from a stop) was minimized (this is onroad, mind you) The right psi made worlds of difference in the onroad ride. That said the ST Maxx's are not as easily overcome by the V8 as the originals - I don't know if that's a tread compound difference or a width difference. My preference is leaning toward the Maxx's tread pattern and compound, but I'm not sold on the 285's vs the 255's.

I'm still digging the Maxx's and have about 24,000 miles on them. Still on track for an easy 50,000 miles and wearing evenly.

I have to say they have to be the best street all terrain tire I have ever seen. I know a Cooper distributor and the company I used to work for has them on all their trucks. I run nothing but Cooper on my cars. I even have Zeons on my Ascender. Great looking tire and I'm glad they work well for you.
