I assumed that these would be the best option for snow and ice, as they are tall and narrow, but from what i've learned this is the only size the bfg ats dont have the snowflake rating in. Kinda confused. Does anyone have experience with these? Also, would the fact that im going down in width cancel out some of the mileage drop from increasing tire size from 31s? And if these are not a good idea to run, what size would you suggest?

I've run them for a couple of years. They work great in the snow.

I ran a set of 33x12.50 BFG AT's before the 9.50's. The 9.50's are MUCH better on slick roads.

I don't know what the snowflake rating is, but they do really well.

I've run both 33x9.50 MTs (siped) and 33x10.50 MTs and ATs and all work great in snow and ice. I actually like the 10.50s a little better for off-road snow use, but the 9.50s work great:

the 9.5 will have more pounds per sqaure inch contact pressure so they tend to penetrate and grip onto whatever is solid below.... however this works against you when it gets really deep and can leave you high centered. when its soft and deep, the wider the better... i have chains for my 255/85/16's [33x10] hard to stop me untill its almost past the top of the tire...
