5.0L 302 Swap, rear axle upgrade

I have a 5.0L 302 that will put out about 325hp and 365 ft-lbs of torque, This is going In a 1980 truck. Rear axle upgrade? For Sure…..Chromoly axles or maybe a Ford rear end? Has anyone done this type of V8 swap and modified or replaced anything from the transfer case back?

I was thinking ford 9" or "maybe" chromoly axles. I read that some have good luck with them with a 351w. I guess it all comes down to what you do with the truck and how you drive it....

Ide go with the 9 over just some chromoly alxes. The yota ring and pinion would be what I would be afraid of breaking. be hard pressed to break the 9 and you could put some nice axles in there too. the 9" third is a much stonger design over the yotas

Yeah your right, I'll have to start looking around my area for one. As for tranny and t-case, I'm using a Marlin built R150. This is no rock crawler or hard core off-roader. Just a toy with a little attitude....

question is how would the over all width compair to the stock yota, from brake drum to brake drum? Would it be a little shorter or longer? I see for a rear end from a early 65-66 housing is about 52"....and what about the spring perch location compaired to the toyota? I guess my question is a Ford 9 from what model would work best?

im not sure on widths but a good place to find that info would be on pirate. Maybe someone on here could tell you. You can also cut them down or lenghten an axle. Just have to have some pretty good skills or a place to do it and youd have to have custom axles made. but this way you get exactly what you want

Cant go wrong with a 14b. Cheap and STRONG. Full floater would be the ultimate.

If I ever upgrade my rear axle, I will for sure go with a full floater.

1976-77 Ford Bronco with 11" drums. It's the same width as an IFS Toyota rear. Good: Big bearing, bigger 11" brakes, stronger housing than the older ones. Bad: 28 spline axles stock, probably a 3.50:1 open diff, 5 lug.

Put in a ford 9". Hot rodders have been pumping 500+ into them for years. What tranny and case are you using ?

The ford 8.8 in the current Stangs is pretty stout too even with the stock splines, I did 4500 rpm clutch drops on 4:10's and they held on my 420 rwhp Stang...

8.8 with some 31 splines and welded tubes is near bulletproof, but the 9inch is cheaper and stronger IMO, just giving you options because the width is so cose on the 8.8's in Exploders, Rangers, and mustangs...

i had one of those and literally threw it away when my dad sold his house.. kicking my own ass right now. was exactly as you described but was from a custom100 pickup truck. 28 spline, 3.50 gears, open diff.. piss. but anyhow that leads me to believe you could find them on some of the pickup trucks as well.

i put over 500 thru the 9" in the truck in my sig.. i actually broke a few teeth on the ring gear AND two of the spider gears back in highschool... guess 5,000 rpm clutch drops on 28inch slicks takes its toll lol. i since built it up a tad.. still has the stock 31 spline axles, just a powertrax lunchbox locker (which i hate) and some 4.10 richmonds. ive beat the ever lovin out of that rear and not so much as a noise from it.. the truck weighs like 4800 lbs on top of all the power and abuse..

as far as 8.8s.. are the explorers center pumpkin locations? i know the rangers are all offset, and seems like the ranger is the same playform as an exploder (reference intended, ours caught fire christmas day while we were driving to familys house, steering column just started smoking) -- my point. would you have to rob one from a stang and just stitch on some spring perches?
