Well, I did this in an 85 runner a few years back, and actually planning on doing it again. I put an early 70's 302 in the first one. Had great success, ran good. This time I am going to put in an EFI 351.

Stuff to think about, what transmission will you be running and what are you plans with transfer case, and the use of the vehicle. What are you planning on doing with the rig.

Mine was a rock crawler. 302 was nice to have rumble and low end torque, more than the 22RE. Didn't need it, just wanted it. Same with the 351, don't need, but want. I'm going with the 351 this time though because they have more rolling mass weight for idle crawling than the 302. 302 will spool up faster than the 351, but I'm not drag racing either.

There are a number of adapters, stuff like that to choose from. First time I went with a B/W WC T-5. This time, not sure, but might just stick with the W56 that I have. Undecided. Anyway, check out www.northwestoffroad.com, and www.advanceadapters.com for lots of info.

Good luck, and I hope I helped.

im running a 92 351w in my 85 xtra cab , here is a small list of issues i ran into on my swap ..

1 . while the bell housings are the same the taller deck height will add both height and width wich makes exhaust clearence an issue ..my fix was info i found on ford ranger v-8 swap web sites ..i used a mid 70's ford 289 maverick manifolds for the pass side they are tight block hugger and dump straight back with a slight bend to clear fire wall .. for the higher block height and be able to close hood either cut hole in hood or use 2 in body lift wich is what i did and also helped in routing radiator lines .

2 . because i used a efi motor i uses the taller efi water pump and left no room for my radiator .. my fix .....put the radiator in my bed wich works well in the mud here in alaska keeps it clean and fresh air you can also run the shorter pump and run the v-belts

3. running your accesories like power steering pumps and alternator brackets
fords like to hang everything off thier water pumps and down low and wide right where the yotas frame sits and ontop of our power steering boxes .. my fix.... was to use March Performance brackets you can choose any position you want your power steering pumps and alternators .

im using a ford 1 ton van E350 Saginaw pump (same bolt pattern as f150 and bronco pump just little offset ..) and i aslo swapped from the stock 1g alternator to a hotter 130 amp 3g alternator and turned it into a 1 wire for hotter charges down at idle .

im also using NWOR's adapter and engine mounts so its a total bolt in affair ..however i have twisted the stock frame side mount off the frame so the second time i hade plated it in and fully welded it .

hope this helps for starters .. i can post pics if u need em .
