1uz swappers, looking for your opinions.

I have realized that my diesel powered 4runner on 42's is not adequate on power. I have a 1uz in my cousins shop and thinking of dropping that in my 4runner or a turbo 3rz.

My question is, should I go with the 1uz, what trans should I use? I would like to know your pros and cons on going with a R150 or a sc400 auto. Mostly the drivability on road and off and what you would do over if you had the chance.

Here is a pic of said 4runner.
Currently; OM617/W56/stock dual cases, D60/14B with 5.38's locked and spooled, 42" PBR's with diy beadlocks, 4link rear, RUF.

How many people have used a different torque converter in their auto and how much of a difference did it make?

For the guys with r150's and used the 3vz flywheel, I noticed in the many build threads some of you shaved 5/16's off of the back of the flywheel and had to take the same amount off the bell housing as well. Could you just move the starter ring gear over 5/16's?

How is the "off the line" acceleration with the stock auto and the 5speed? I am trying to avoid the situation I had with my fj62. When wheeling, the engine would have to wind up to get the wheels spinning in the clay-ish mud out here. I want to just hit the gas and the tires are spinning. I know with a manual I can rev it up, but with an auto I would imagine I will want a higher stall torque converter. Also, I have a 3800 stall converter available to use if I so wish. Kinda excessive, but its free.

I went with the Lexus auto in my 89 w/37" boggers. While it does rob some power from the engine I have no problem getting the tires spinning and the engine is really rev happy.

I noticed you used the thailand guy's swap kit for you next project. What do you think of the quality of the kit? Also, what trans are you using and are you using that little spacer that is included?

from experience, that motor is amazing with a 5speed, it feels faster in my truck with a r150 than it did in the lexus with a auto. great swap to do. i need to update my thread with pics and whatnot,

Awesome! I am leaning towards a r150 for my swap. I have driven my cousins sc400 and I felt like it had power, but not what I expected.

After doing one 1uz swap into an 88 truck using the auto, if I ever do it agian I would use the R150 series trans instead.

It looks like a good quality part but I haven't finished it yet. I am using the R150 and I have to use the shaft spacer.

With 5:38's and the r150 you'll be grabbing gears all over the place, as for off idle power you will not be let down. I can punch it from a rolling idle and dang near lift the front tires off the ground( not really but you know what I mean)
If I remember right the engine is building around 100-110 ftbs and over 100hp at 1500rpms and just builds power all the way up... Honestly the engine is amazing.

As for the adapters, if you use the 3vz flywheel its easier to machine the back, you will have to shorten your flywheel bolts of course. No bell housing machining is required to get the right depth. The adapter plate is a double function, one to adapt to the 1uz bell, and second to space the input shaft away from the engine since the r trans bell is longer. Now I did run into an issue/ non issue I had to space the clutch fork away frok the trans to catch the pressure plate with the throwout bearing. But the shaft housing the bearing rides on is just long enough.

Thanks for all the replies.

I picked up a r150f from a 2000 tacoma. Unforunately, the 1uzswapkit adapter has gone up in price and can't order it until the middle of the month. I was going to use that kit because it was complete and I liked the use of the throwout bearing. I am now leaning towards getting the v-eight.com file and sourcing my plate to cut it, then try to make a plate to use the GTO throwout bearing setup.

Since my 4runner is mostly for off road use, I want to go with a heavy flywheel. I have called LCE a couple of times and they have never gotten back to me about making a 1uz flywheel from a 3/5vz flywheel in the 37/8 lb flavor. I figure the heavier flywheel will be more useful for wheeling.

Has anyone gone through someone else for a custom flywheel?

I have seen those as well, but they don't weigh that much. A stock 3/5vz would be more weight.

I have another question for those who have gone before me

When you hooked up your throttle cable to the throttle body, did you get the full range of motion out of the TB (throttle body) and pedal? I seem to not be able to get the last 1/4 of an inch of travel out of the TB.

My problem is the throw of the pedal, not the cable. It seems like the pedal is not long enough to make up that last 1/4 in of throttle.
