Yet another 3.4 swap, but this one is using an auto ecu in manual truck.

So in late november i bought this 92 pickup from a kid for pretty cheap, had a bad 3.0, oily, leaky, non running, manual trans, 240k on the chassis. So after looking on here, a 3.4 seemed like the best idea. So i searched around for a while, and came across a wrecked auto 4runner on craigs. The guy only had hit some ice, and ran into a tree, engine had 230k. I only paid 500, for the complete 4runner. So i figured if the thing runs, and i part out the 4runner, then its worth it. I pulled the engine out of the truck, before i had even bought the 4 runner, i got a nice surprise, when the passenger side engine mount was welded to the chassis mount. I had to remove the ac comp, the bracket and pull the engine with the mount still connected to the chassis, so gay.

parts im using

3.4 engine, with auto ecu/harness(i figured i would try it and see how it went)
3.0 flywheel, clutch, and disc. 3.4 pilot bearing, 3.0 throw out bearing.
stock 3.0 dipstick and tube.
stock 3.0 power steering lines.
3.0 starter, because my drill bits were at my buddies house.
3.4 windage tray with stock 3.0 oil pan.
3.0 oil pressure sending unit.
3.4 alternator.

sweet oil eveywhere, notice the engine mount still in there.

Now that that was finished, i towed the 4runner to my parents house to tear down.

Cut the core support, to just yank everything out the front.

The next week after i pulled the engine, my dad and i stripped everything good off the chassis. pretty much just a bare frame and wrecked body was left.
I then took that to the scrapper, got 100, back from that. Onlt thing really left to sell are the trans, and the rear end. I think i have taken in about 750 so far.

The engine was leaking oil bad from the valve covers, so i replaced the gaskets. The timing belt looked very bad, a lot of cracks, so i replaced that. I figured i didn't want to come back to this stuff, so i replaced water pump, idler bearing, and tensioer bearing, also did from and rear crank seals.

oil and dirt=gay sludge

I drilled the dipstick plug out, and plugged the oem dipstick hole, im impatient, and used what i had. What i had was a 3/8 standard tap, i used a 3/8 bolt, nut, and sealed it with hondabond(basically grey rtv)

drilled 3.4 plug, with oem 3.0 dipstick tube.

3/8 bolt, flush with the inside, sealed the threads, with hondabond, 3/8 standard tap is a little big for this, but it works.

3/8 bolt, with nut to lock it down, plus hondabond.

Oil pan exchange was next, i personally don't like how toyota sandwiches the the 3.0 windage tray between the pan and the block. So i used the 3.4 windage tray, cut a hole with a hole saw for the 3.0 pickup, and shimmed one of the legs to clear a bolt.

Next i did the crossover pipe....well that did not go so well. I totally forgot i had my auto trans, so i just kind of eyeballed it, and figured it would clear. Not so much, actually got the engine in place, and it was hitting part of the torsion bar mount. So i ended up having to pull the engine back out. Then i realized i had the auto trans, so i yanked the bellhousing for mock up, bolted it up to the engine, and had no more issues. So yeah.

I used the 3.0 clutch flywheel, and pressure plate, as my doner was an auto. The kid i got the truck from told me the clutch had been replaced, but i figured i would buy a new one anyway. So i bought a sachs clutch from a local place, I looked at the old disc, and the new disc, and they were the same, and were almost identical in thickness. And since i'm not working, i decided to return the new clutch and use the old one. I did have to buy a pilot bearing for the crank, but either way i would have had to do that.

to far from bellhousing

to far from bellhousing

rubbing the t bar mount.

The welds are pretty raw, as i had a bit of gap that needed filled. I didn't have the proper cut off wheels, so i used a hacksaw to cut all the flange ends off, and for the shorty section that was spliced in.

Well either i didnt read all the threads about the crossover pipe, or i missed something along the way. Having it in the wrong place really sucked. Hopefully someone will see the pic, and not do the same thing i did. It really sucked, that i forgot about the auto trans i had laying in the corner. The whole time, im thinking man i need a bellhousing, but don't have one.

Looking good. I got a 1990 2 door 4Runner set for a 3.4 swap but I can't get caught up to get to it. Driving me crazy.

I had mine eyeballed by the exhaust shop. They did an excellent job with it, but it was reusing that double flange that did me in. I had to have them rip it all apart and run them into a collector, then into a single flange. Fit like a glove after that.

So i need to take more pictures of the finished project, But the truck has been up and running for a while, With 230k this thing runs like a champ, doesnt smoke, good power, great torque. I never got to drive with the 3.0, as i bought the truck with a bad engine. So i didn't know what kind of power to expect, over all im pretty happy with it.

Disconnect 2 of the spark plugs and you'll get a good idea what the 3.0 was like

Good work so far. Lucky you getting a donor vehicle. Wish I had, finding all the little parts is a pain.
