Anthony's 3.4 swap
6/27/2011 After years of dependable service of the 3.0 engine, it has finally blown the infamous head gasket. The removal of the 3.0 has begun.
This process will be as fast as I can spare the time to do as this is not my only transportation.
Just to keep a log of how much this is costing me and others to prepare funding for their own swap project.
1996 T100 2wd 3.4 engine, intake, ECU, OBDII connector.................1450.00

So far, I've removed the radiator, wire harness from computer, exhaust from where the two sides meet and joined with three nuts. I've also removed the battery, intake pipes from the throttle body.
I'll be looking for a 3.4 engine at junk yards. I'm looking for a 3.4 engine from manual trans. I also plan to add a header while I'm at it.
Here's some pics to get started. I do have some advantages because I have 2" body lift and SAS. I have more room to work. Ex. I can get the top bolt of the transmission out easily. I can get underneath and side to loosen the AC brackets.

I'd love to get a whole vehicle but I don't have room to park a vehicular caucus on my drive way which is in front of the house. Besides, my neighbors will not look at me kindly. There are bunch of resources for parts within about 10 mile radius and I don't live in a bad neighborhood either. That's just how it is in some parts of So. CA.

Don't use Toyota Truck and SUV
I have been in there several times while doing my swap and everytime they tried to upsell something that was listed for much much less on carpart.com. Maybe it was just my experience but I thought they were just out to screw you. What ever you do, make sure you use a reputable place or check the engine extensively.. I pieced mine but I was able to find two places that most everything I needed. I also did a auto to manual swap at the same time. I ref it on monday and I can't wait. Good luck

Everyone has an opinion. I was actually there yesterday, a year after i purchased everything and well beyond my 60 day warranty. I didnt have the correct ecu and wire harness. He let me take a matching ecu and harness with the promise to ship the incorrect ones back to him. (I live 3 hours south of Sacramento) Also gave me a free mass air flow sensor since it changed in 99 to the drop in style. I walked out paying $22 for the last couple parts I needed. Worked out great for me!
I also did the auto to manual swap and got all the parts from the same place for about $350 including transmission. Again, no complaints!
I can understand them trying to make a few bucks... they tried the same tactics and once I told him the place around the corner would do he cheaper he matched the price no questions asked.
Did you use drivers side drop with the exhaust?

They're a little far for me. I'm in So. Cal.
I've been talking to Cal Mini Truck in Montclair. They quoted me 1650 for engine, ecu, harness, OBDII conn., AFM... and $45 to deliver.
I've been sick with Bronchitis so I haven't done much to it.

Cal Mini truck, one of the largest junkyard for Toyota trucks. They can't find the wiring for manual trans. I'm gonna go with the automatic engine out of 96 T100 with 67K miles. I'll have to deal with the wiring later. I'm getting it with manual computer and AFM, air cleaner box, OBDII connector...1450 +tx delivered to my house.

why does it say 4x2 m/t? if it's suppose to be an auto ecu? It's not an m/t for 96 or 97 because that uses 2 row plugs. Maybe I am just not seeing it right?

I think eventhough the engine wiring harness from 96T100 2WD auto plugs into 97-98T100 2WD manual, The pins are probably different. I'm having the Toyota mech. at the dealer look up both wiring diagrams for me. I hop to have the answer in a few days.
In the mean time, I have the wiring diagram for the 96T100 2WD.

At least someone was able to look it up for you.
I broke down and called Cliff at toyonlyswaps.com, as I was missing a few plugs needed. After talking to him for a few I ended up deciding to ship everything to them and let them build the harness. Glad I did... I'll have it back in 2 weeks ready to roll!
I would hit TIS up for $15 and get everything from 96-98/99? T100 so you have them all.

Thanks for the replies. Apparently, in 98, There were three or different manual ECU's according to Toyodiy.com My ECU was used for like a month or something. I think it's gonna be hard to find the wiring diagram. I'm hoping the ECU they end up using the longest which is 89661-34352 has the same wiring configuration.
I think I have all the plugs. I still need the intake box....or I'll just do the open air kit.
