Timing Chain Question

When you blow out the guides on a timing chain, what would it sound like?
I have this engine noise that comes right after the engine starts and than lasts for only about 30 seconds. It's a very odd kind of high pitched whine. After the 20-30 seconds, the noise goes away but can still be heard at a lower volume when the RPMS are increased. If anyone every had this niose on their 22-RE please help! oh yeah 1991 4x4 standard cab.

Yes it's about that time. To be certain pull off your valve cover and peek down the front with a flash light. I bet the drivers side guide is gone. You'd be wise to change it soon before more serious damage can occur.

Serious damage,
1. chain jumps sprocket and you lose time, possibly bending some valves.
Not so serious,
2. Chain grinds through timing cover and leaks coolant everywhere you don't want it.

Mine jumped at 145,000 miles. Not enough to bend valves but it had zero power.

I'm not trying to scare you or freak you out, just letting you know the possibilities. And yes mine clanked for about 20 sec. at start up. Now it's very quiet.
If you get your own t-set, get it from

Engnbldr.com

Make sure you get the metal backed guide. $64.00 for the kit! Well worth it. Great products, great prices.

On a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to replace the timing chain?

Can you change just the guides and not the chain?

Is it possible to change the guides and not the chain?
