Problem With Accelleration On '98 4runner

My '98 4runner has started to stutter and "hiccup" when i hit the accelerator pedal over the past few days or so. I believe I might have gotten my tank refilled the evening before this started to happen. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this, and how I can fix it. My tank is 3/4 full so it would not be possible to go and get my tank refilled with new fuel. Could it be the fact that the engine is within a 100 miles of reaching 100,000.Any input would be helpful. My aol instant messenger name is mrmojo1219.

Have you ever replaced the fuel filter? Try that and perform the other 30k maintainence items.

Maybe you got a bad batch of fuel. Though, the fuel filter would be a good thing to replace and you might also want to check the MAF sensor especially if you run an amsoil or K&N air filter. If you over oil those filters, the oil can coat the MAF and cause bad throttle response or "hiccuping". That happened to me, I also got a check engine light though, so I just cleaned the MAF and everything was fine after that. There's a good write up on it in the tech section.

"Vehicle Performance May Be Affected

On May 23rd, ConocoPhillips expanded the potentially affected area. Counties include:
Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Pierce, Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, Kitsap, Jefferson, Island, Clallam, Lewis and Pacific.

FERNDALE, Wash., May 19, 2005 --- ConocoPhillips announced today that some gasoline recently sold in the Ferndale area may have affected vehicle performance, even though the product met or exceeded all state, local and federal gasoline specifications.

Customers who recently purchased gasoline at area retail locations supplied by ConocoPhillips, including but not limited to 76-branded locations, and who have experienced vehicle performance issues, such as rough idle or hesitation, should take their vehicles to an authorized dealership for their brand of car for inspection. If repairs are required due to this issue, ConocoPhillips will make payment directly to local authorized dealers. For additional information, including a list of authorized repair facilities, click here or call ConocoPhillips customer service at 800-527-5476. Repairs must be made by authorized repair facilities."

Is that at partial throttle or full throttle?

When my MAF went bad, I had no power at all at full throttle and some stumbling at partial throttle.

is there a way to check the MAF sensor? or does that have to be done at a dealer or shop?

Mine popped a code that was I think Bank 1 running lean? I had it scanned at autozone for free. I swapped some parts for a maf at a junkyard and just swapped it out to try it and it worked.

I would try cleaning it first, then worry about getting the dealer involved:
