Oil for Manual tranny

I have a '93 Toyota p/u with the 22re and 5-speed manual tranny. I was wondering about changing the tranny oil. I don't know if it has ever been changed but there is a possibility that it has. The tranny has 178,000 miles on it that I know of.

What suggestions do you all have for me?

Thanks.

GM Synchromesh, do a search here for it.. its synthetic and is very expensive, but it is supposed to be superior to everything else... its not commonly know about though... also make sure you use something gl4 rated, the gl5 is too slippery for the synchros

i thought synchromesh is really thin stuff? i run sta-lube GL4 oil, but my 2nd gear is still pretty rough(screwed up synchro or something, often makes a crunch shifting into 2nd). ah well, i'll have my tranny built into an L52HD by marlin someday...

i run the GM synchromesh in my '91 MR-2, and it has done wonders for the shifting. some people on the MR-2 forum think that it will cause long-term wear, but no one has any proof. i would suggest using a conventional gear oil like Mobil1 synthetic or the Redline and if those don't work to your satisfaction, then try out the synchromesh.

also, i was planning on doing an engine swap in the 2, so the long term effects didn't worry me much. FWIW, i will probably use the synchromesh again with the new transmission.
