Begin by opening your gas cap to depressurize your fuel line.
Bob, I'm not understanding this. Isn't the pressure after the pump?
Taking out the pump fuse and starting the engine is the only way to depressurize the fuel lines as far as I know.

This is prolly a stupid question but where is the fuel filter located on an 88 pickup?

4Runr,

Yes, you're right. Maybe I should write "partially depressurize"? What do you think?

As far as what you recommended, i dont think that's entirely necesary but I'll add it to the write up. Regardless, a fair amount of fuel will be in there anyways.

Yah totally unnecessary, I think pumps on the 3rg gen 'leak' anyway. The logic behind it is the 'hard' starting; which is remedied by turning key to ACC for a few seconds to energize the fuel pump and build up the pressure.

And I did notice that 'hard' starting is present only after sitting for 3+ hours, otherwise it starts up fine, which I guess supports the hypothesis

on my 86 the fuel filter is right above the passenger side wheel. there was a little metal plate that i unbolted from the wheel well to make it easier. it would be even easier if you took off the wheel now that i think about it.

All i did with mine was release the pressure from the tank ...by undoing the cap.
I only had about 200-300 ml of fuel come out.& the was very litte pressure.

My truck had about 120K miles on it when I changed it, and it definitely needed it. I don't think the previous owner had ever done it. I cut it in half to see how bad it was:

Can you cut a new one in half for comparison sake?

Nice writeup as usual Bob. I just have one thing, I don't think those are banjo fittings, they're compression fittings. the 4cyl on my wife's old '99 Tacoma had banjo's.

Heh, I would have, but I didn't want to get that scientific.

yeah, my truck gets horrid gas mileage, partly cause of the crappy k&n filter that clogs WAY to easy, and probably cause ive never cleaned the maf and never changed the fuel filter, or the spark plugs, or nothing.

its not in my maintance guide and i didnt see it on toyota.com's maintance schedule for the 3.4 v6.....

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying its not a good idea to do, because it is......but some vehicles dont have servicible fuel filters, take jeep wranglers for example, the fuel filter is located inside of the fuel tank at the pump....to change it would require you dropping the tank....saying "it unscrews, so that means its a maintance item" doesnt really make sense, because I cant think of one think on the vehicle that doesnt unscrew, unbolt or unsnap....

I dunno why I'm arguing against you guys since I do agree with changing it...heheheh

Newby here. '99 4Runner V6 SR5

I tried to replace my fuel filter last night, and could not get the compression fittings on the 'Out' side of the filter to reseal. Spent a couple hours taking it off and putting it back on, but it continued to Leak at about 1 drop every 3 seconds.

I ended up putting the old one back on and No Problems.

I did notice the inlet and outlet holes on the new filter are noticably bigger than the old one (probably about a milimeter). Could this have caused the leak? Did I get a bad part (Toyota Fuel Filter #23300-62030 )?

That's weird...the maintenance schedule I got from the dealer specifically lists the fuel filter...maybe they changed it since then.

At any rate you're correct, it is worth changing since it's so easy and cheap to do.

I'd think so.
I'm at 64K and I'm going to wait until 100K

Yeah, I agree with Tacoma Dude, wait until 100K to do it. With only 42K there's not much crap in the filter yet.
