4runner horn
THE HORN ON MY 90 4RUNNER IS VERY FAINT...HOWEVER MY 99 4RUNNER HAS A LOUD DISTINCTIVE TOYOTA SOUND...DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE 90 HORN WAS SIMILAR TO THE 99 IN SOUND. I'M DEBATING TRYING TO PUT A 99 HORN ON MY 90 BUT DON'T KNOW IF IT'S INTERCHANGEABLE. AND HAS ANYONE FOUND A REPAIR MANUAL THAT'S MORE DESCRIPTIVE THAN THE HAYNES, THE DETAIL IS ALMOST NON EXSISTENT. THANKS

Here is a factory manual from a CD made up into PDF files.
http://www.net-impress.com/4runner/cd/
DL the Zip file, and you will have them all.
It's for the 2nd gen 4Runner.
The 2nd gen uses a wierd system by Toyota where the hot wire going to your horns is live all the time.
When you push the button on the wheel, you are grounding it.
I replaced my horns a few years ago with Fiam Highway Blasters available from NAPA Auto Parts.
First time I hooked them up they went off as the body of them was grounded.
I ended up using a 30 amp relay like you use for off road lamps and wired that in and that solved the problem.
They are quite loud.
Using the ones from your newer rig might work as long as you don't ground the body of the horn thus setting it off.
To hear my honkers, visit my video section on my website.
Oh, it is also easier on the eyes if you don't "shout" at us by using all caps

Get an air horn. There's a write up in the tech section. Cost somewhere in the $30 range. My horn works fine, but it sounds like a little girly horn. I'm afraid to use it in front of other people.
