What MPG are you getting with the chevy 4.3 and the toy 3.4
I've been researching both swaps
, I would like to go with toyota stuff but, its expensive around here. I have done a chevy v8 swap in my jeep so I'm familiar with that engine. I've also come across a 4.3TBI for rather cheap, so if I could get some stats on the two for some comparision. Thanks, Shane. |

I've been getting around 18-19 mpg on my 3.4 converted '90 Xtra cab pick-up, but that is traveling around at high altitude (5,000 to 11,000 ft in the Colorado Rockies).

Yeah I know it sounds un-yotaish, but I'd opt for the chevy 4.3. Its a smooth running engine, tons of em out there, aftermarket upgrades un limited (its a sbc w/ 2 cyl's chopped off for crying out loud) and the most important of all: CHEAP! Oh yeah as far as fuel economy, its gonna be about the same either way 3.4 yota vs. 4.3 gm. 4.3 engine is a torquey s.o.b. it doesent have to work it's arse off to make power (low rpm) as for the 3.4 it's powerband is moch higher rpm. Both engines are awesome so either way ya go they got their pros and cons. 4.3 torque+big tires=happy camper

I LOVE the 3.4.. but i gotta say the chevy 4.3 is such a cheap engine to come by parts wise its almost worth it to do that swap.. even if it is TBI

wow... 17.5! I just sold my 92 4.3TBI 4x4 auto s-10 with 80K miles to buy my first toyota pickup a few months ago. i always saw 17mpg city and 21.5 highway with it. Did see 24mpg highway once when i wasn't in a hurry on a trip to chicago last spring. I miss that 4.3! It would pull anything, including a lifted 86 full size chevy. Too bad the rest of the truck couldn't hold up like my toyota does.

I'm leaning towards the 4.3 because I can pick them up for around $200-500. I can make modified wiring harness out of the stock one, and the seem to have good power.

i get 20-22 city in my DD 94 2wd GMC sonoma 4.3 TBI with a 4L60e with over 209 thousand miles. great truck extreamly reliable very very simple to work on. i would go with a turbo 350 or turbo 400 or even a 700r4 for a tranny, 4l60e are not the strongest thing although i havent had any trouble with mine.
that is city driving in albuquerque which is 5000-6000 above sea and you get worse gas milage up here, thinner air=less eficiant burn and less MPG's. not to get too far off the subject but they say cars at the drag strip loose at least a second in the quarter.

4L60e's have a hard time staying alive in smaller cars (camaro/trans am) so if you did go automatic, opt for the 4L80-e that's built.

Mpg
My 4.3 CPI gets around 16 mpg w/700R4 and 36" tires. I have put about 60K miles after the swap and am very pleased. Wiring the thing was a snap w/ the chevy donor harness. Don't get fooled by after market harnesses. I live in Cali so smog was an issue, but me and the man worked it out.

My 4.3 TBI, R150, dualed, 4.88'd, 35'd xtracab never saw a hint over 15mpg, even on highwya.
Get a 3.4 at 18-19 and you'll make up the difference quickly. |

You simply cannot compare a 5speed 3.4 Toyota motor with an Automatic 4.3 Chevy. Automatics just get worse MPG than manuals, plain and simple. Of course you're gonna get a little worse with the 4.3, because it's almost 1 liter bigger, but the difference is gonna be small (probably like .5MPG, or less), and the torque gains are gonna be so much more over the 3.4, the Chevy 4.3 is my choice hands down, plus it's WAY cheaper to buy

i did the 4.3 swap and love it SO MUCH POWER ahhhahahahahahah no but really if your gonna do a swap go carb so much easier with abt 400 dollars you can get rid of all wire grimlins with an edlebrock dual plane intake for a 4.3 qnd 500 cfm carb also you would need a junk yard hei distributer out of and old 3.8 or 4.3
the 4.3 makes a great swap canidate i swaped mine out a few months ago and love the ever loving out of it if you have any questions let a rip and i should be able to answer them |
