Looking for info on beach driving & overnight camping on East Coast

I have a 4WD permit for Breezy Point, NY, and its fun driving around there, but it is somewhat crowded and there is no camping allowed.

Does anyone know where, on the East Coast, one can drive out on the beach and stay overnight, build a fire, etc, with an SUV? Cape Cod allows overnight stays only for self contained vehicles (plumbing, holding tanks, etc. I would like to take a drive with my wife and dog and camp out on a nice secluded beach for a couple of days.

Cool! I'm going to investigate these further.

We were in Daytona a couple of years ago, and drove our rental Saturn on the beach. Fun, but not the atmosphere I'm looking for. Daytona was really crowded! I want a place where I may not see another vehicle. Fat chance, I know, but that's my ideal. Thanks for all the info!

Last I knew they closed Daytona Beach to traffic, but I could be wrong (it's happened before).

Can't camp on beaches directly @ OBX but there are camp grounds. I go there on a regular basis during the warmer months.
