so are are you gonna weld plate onto the unibody then use that to weld mounts to? or just find a complete rolling frame and drop the liberty on top of it?. Have you thought about what you're gonna do about the gauges? Abs? A/C? shifter?

welding 1/4in plate to the uni body to attach everything else to keep cog down the gauges will all be done with either sr5 gen 2 stuff or auto meter custom. its going to be a trail rig. no abs no a/c and its going to be a manual already have a hydraulic pedal set for it

will you build sub frame to hold the motor? If you want to keep it a 4cyl then i'd 3rz is the current transfercase a passenger side drop or driver side drop.

it already has a sub frame for the engine. and i have a 86 5 speed and two transfer cases. so it will be passenger side drop.

Well you better start posting pictures of your progress so people can get an idea of whats going on.

project has not officially started yet i am gathering parts and making plans i was positing to see what everyone thinks of the idea.also to maybe get some ideas for the project. i think its going to be a fun build and i will start a build thread as soon as we start stripping down the jeep scrap metal parts. so ill keep everyone updated

As long as this thing isn't going to be a mostly DD on highways, build it with the 22RE and give it some nice low gearing to get the ummmpph it needs.

What was the tire size that was going on this rig? I'd say with 36s or smaller, run 5.29:1 gears. That would help it along and the 22RE can surely take the extra RPMs with no issue.

we were gonna do dual cases stock in one and the 4.70s in the other the 5.29:1 locked front and rear possible high pinion with a 37 12.50 we will have to do a little body work to clear the 37 but with bump stops and lots of down travel it should be great it will on trailer with my gen 1 up to the trails most of the time for wheeling unless staying close by.

a 2001 Jeep Liberty 3.7l v-6, 4x4 weighs approximately 3600lbs, a 1986 toyota 4runner 22re weighs a lil over 3500lbs. I would venture to say the 3.7 weighs almost double what the 22re does, so by putting the 22re in that liberty you will actually be lowering the weight. While the liberty was def more "peppy" than the 86 runner, those runners made perfectly adequate trail rigs (more so than a liberty w 3.7l IMHO). So... I wouldnt think the weight thing should be an issue, especially with dual cases.... I'm sure it wont have as much gitty up and go as the 3.7 did, but will prolly have more than the 86 runners did.... and still be just fine offroad!


That being said... If it were my project (which it is not!) I would look at swapping a 4.0l 6cyl from a cherokee or wrangler.... but thats just me... I'm interested to see how this swap turns out, Good luck to ya!

the thought of doing the 4.0l was a consideration but its a much longer engine than the 22re and would limit us on space for the items like on board air with a york compressor. and we would have to adapt it to the Toyota trans. so we decided against it and are going to keep it Toyota engine and trans. im not really worried about the weight thing the 3.7 v6 is a heavy engine for sure plus we will lose weight in the ac system

I personally hate liberties cus all the sorority girls drive them and they look feminine, but I like the idea of custom stuff. I just put a mercedes diesel in my toyota pickup. It sure turns heads. Just be prepared for a loooooot more work than you expect. If you make good designs and plans and follow thru, you will be extremely satisfied once you are done. I also don't like the idea of the unibody, though. A wrangler would be a lot cooler (that's just my opinion, though).

Gotta ask... How's the fuel economy? I been considering doing the same, or an isuzu diesel from a box truck... not so much for offroad use (although, it will pull logs a lot better w a diesel) Mostly just looking to improve my mileage. 12 MPG is just not gonna cut it at almost $4/gal....

I have a liberty and a 4runner. My 4runner is my crawler and the liberty my daily driver. I have always wanted to lift the liberty but would rather spend the money on my yota. I think it will be pretty cool when its done. Make sure you post pics as you go!

I Will be starting a build thread ass soon as we get under way here for now we are still part collecting.... its gonna be a sweet day when we set the liberty on its new guts and see it leaf sprung and ready to go.

alot of people have told me dont go leaf do link......well if we were going to do link we would just put a jeep axle under the front and put 5 in springs in the rear... we dont like this idea we want to do toyota everything
