I'm all about using Toyota axles. I'm SAS'ing a 97 V6 Tacoma right now and I'm using a FJ62 front axle.

You can swap your transmission and then use a Toyota axle if you want. If you have a 4cyl you can use the W56 and if you have a V6 you can use the R151F with a R150 bell housing or a R150 trans. All of these will give you a passenger side drop.

So basically you have 3 options:

1. Swap your transmission and use a Toyota front axle.
2. Keep your transmission and buy a Diamond housing ($$$) so you can use Toyota parts.
3. Keep your transmission and use a Dana 44/60.

You can use a Marlin/Trail-Gear kit. A number of people over on Pirate4x4 and TORRA have. It's just not designed and marketed for use on Tacoma's.

I'd recommend you do a lot of reading on SASing a Tacoma before you even think about doing a SAS on a Tacoma or 96+ 4Runner, it's not as easy as SASing a pre 95 truck or 4Runner. Just a few things that are different on a Tacoma. 1. The steering. 2. The frames are weaker and need plating.

Actually it does matter. If you SAS the older tacos, you have to change the oil pan and the steering shaft and the point at which it goes through the firewall has to be modified quite a bit.

With the '05 and newer tacos you don't to change the oi pan and the steering shaft needs to be changed but the point at which it goes through the firewall does not need to be modified. Also the oilpan is noched on the drivers side in such a way that it seems Toyota knew we were going to do swaps on them. The frame is also notched on both sides that allow for a cleaner application with coilovers.

So yes it does matter what year your sasing when it comes to Tacos.

Skys-manufacturing.com has everything from toyota pickups,4 runners, and TACOMAS reasonably cheap and great products. Doing a 96' SAS and v8 engine swap right now. I've bought the front spring perch, 4 shackles, 4 shackle hangers, and 2 spring hangers from them and probably didn't spend over $300 and found chevrolet 12" springs in the local paper for $400 so hopefully it'll be worth it.

How does swapping my tranny help with output location for diff offset?

Pre-96 4Runners and Pre-95 Pickups (Tacoma's) have passenger side drop transfer cases. So if you swap one of those transmissions into a 3rd Gen 4Runner or Tacoma that gives you the drop you need to use Toyota Axles.

Another option that I'm currently doing is, take a rear FJ60/62 axle cut the ends off and have some mini balls cut down .025 inch press them in and now you have a 66" WHS to WMS 9.5" diff driver side drop Toyota Axle.

Or

You could take a FJ60/62 Front axle and flip it. You rotate the Balls 180 degrees then cut and rotate the diff cover. The holes for the 9.5" diffs line up no matter where they are so you don't have to drill and tape any new holes.

I'm planning to put together a write-up (when I get some extra time) on both of these options as I've done or am doing both. I'm just trying to show people you do not need to use inferior (my personal opinion) Dana axles or spend $$$ on custom axles housings.

Yeah, but in most cases you can keep your tranny... only have to swap the transfer case.

I'm talking about when doing a Tacoma or 3rd Gen 4Runner SAS.

Where you swap the T-case, which has the front output which is the relevant one since all Mini rear outputs are centered.
