wich is stronger in your opinin. ifs carrier or a 4 cyl third members carrier. im no doubt doing a sas in the next couple months and curious how strong the 4 cylinders carrier on my 85 runner donor axle is in comparison to my ifs carrier i have been wheelin for the past 4 years. would you swap out the 4 cyl third member for a v6 third member. Or am i just a little to paranioid.

I am not exactly sure if the 7.5" IFS ring gear is weaker, but I would assume it is a little bit weaker compared to an 8" ring gear. The 6cyl third members have 4 ribs on each side for support as well as larger bearings and is a 4 pinion design. The 4cyl thirds only have 3 ribs on each side for support and is a 2 pinion design.

im wondering the same thing cuz if its that much stronger i would rather rebuild a v6 third than the 4cyl third that came with my axle

either way, the ring gear in the SFA is stronger than the 7.5" gear in the IFS diff. If you're still on the stock 3.slow, you have no need to worry about breaking ring gear IMO

I understand the ring gear is bigger. its a 8 inch just like me rearend. Im wondering about the carrier and bearings on the 4 cyl housing v.s. a ifs carrier. I know the ifs is 2 splines smaller pinion and 7.5 ring gear

i know for a fact that the 4cyl SFA carrier and bearings are stronger than the 7.5 IFS diff. Im in the process of re gearing the 4cyl diff and it comes with the ring and pinion and all the bearings and shims new so thats deff stronger which gives me a good piece of mind.

The 3.slow will break ring and pinions in the IFS no problem depending on the type of wheel'n you do. Been there and done that, 2 ring gears and on set of spider gears. IFS diff's SUCK!!!
I would definatly stick with all the SFA stuff.

Thank you 4runner92sr5 thats exactly what i wanted to know. that just gave me the peice of ming i was looking for. I have hammered my if.s probly as hard as i will my straight axle and actually havent broken even a cv axle or u-joint so 4 cyl diff will be just fine.

If you got the funds, you can put FJ80 high pinion in the SA with ARB locker.
The 3.0 engine combine with crawler gear can break things just as well as any other engine.

really dont think that will be necessary. Honestly im not worried about strenth, I have never tore a cv bood, broke a cv axle or even a u joint. Im suprised. Im mainly doing a sas for more flex than what my ifs gives me.

I am running V6 thirds front and rear. 4.10 gears for now, LockRight rear and open, but another LockRight up front coming soon.

how do you like the driveability of the lockright on the street? Is it really that bad on tires?

I'm doing my sas here soon and thinking about the lunch box

I agree, an you will also have a more desirable driveshaft angle.

I used a High Pinion in mine, with stock 4.88 gears. It came out of a Toyota Land Cruiser LJ-70, not sold in the US.
