RUBICON - Sonoran Steel/Stubbs Welding Rubicon Run. June 23, 24 & 25 - 2005

Minimum Requirements: 33's, Rear Locker and sliders. You should really have more.

If you would like to attend, contact me. We'll talk about it.

sschaefer@fastq.com

Here is a run down from the trip leader Richard Stubbs:

There are two very important things to remember about the Rubicon:

The first is if you run the trail ANYTIME after the 4th of July
(actually a WEEK PRIOR is more like it) it is a completey stacked out
cake walk. This is due to all the non driving slackees that pour onto
that trail, and move things around. If someone goes in even later say
after Heepers Jamboree or Heep Jamboree USA then you really get a lame
trail, and very easy to drive trail.

The second is if you go in from the WT entrance (ie Loon Lake) than
you are already running the trail the easy way. The reason is that
there are only three difficult sections (aside from any optional lines
or smaller obstacles) those are Little Sluice, True/Old sluice, and
Big Sluice. When coming in the WT entrance all that transpires is that
you go down all off the difficult sections which as we all know is a
whole lot easier than going up! Of course there is Cadillac but if its
dry thats easy too(plus the stacking syndrome there). Now the Little
Sluice is WAY WAY harder than it has ever been, and this was due to
someone moving rock in over Memorial day weekend (2004) last year.

This trip will go like this:

Start at the Staging area in Tahoe.

DAY#1 Down Caddy, into the springs, UP Big Sluice , Camp at buck-
drink & be merry!

Day#2 Leave buck (might leave camp set up) head up Old Sluice , Little
Sluice (I will most likely be the only one who runs this, and I would
not tease anyone for not trying as it would take out all linds of
sheet metal!!!), and out to Gatekeeper to the slabs. Now from the WT
entrance we will then head all the way back through soup kitchen,
Little Sluice, down Old sluice again!, back to buck to camp or back
down Big Sluice to the springs to camp. Again food, drink, good times!

Day#3 Drive out from Buck or the Springs- we'll know that day!

So to sum it up. These guys are going to not only run the trail while
it is still difficult but they are going to run it the hard way (Tahoe
to Loon). Not only that but they will be running it twice. 98% of all
people who run the Con always go from Loon to Tahoe, and never get to
experience the trail the way it was really meant to be run.

All of my trips are exactly (with the exception of very few) like
what I have planned for the group, and I will admit that I am alittle
nervous about making my plan work. That is generally I can fly through
there (having to wait in places to pass or folks moving over for me),
and even then they are long days. I will have a group of people with
newer rigs (hence more caution-I too would be watching panels if I was
driving a DD) so this will be a potentially difficult trip to pull
off. Going up Big Sluice could take alot of the groups time, and Up
True Sluice is definately going to take more time than I am used too.

What really matters to me is that everyone has fun. I am looking
forward to meeting the people who are able to go, and I really want
them to get an idea of what that place is all about.

I went through, read all of what I wrote, and realized I missed
something.

When one comes from Loon Lake *if* the gatekeeper is still a
memorable obstacle(aside from LS) when thay are camping at the springs
the trail is definately already been stacked!

I am curious as to the dates you guys ran the trail, and if the slabs
were run instead of Old Sluice? It is easy to miss OS, and get on the
slabs instead.
Not taking anything away from you-I just had to vent about the "real"
trail that the Con can be. I admit that I personally would take
forever getting through at anytime of the year if I was driving a
newwer rig. Not only that but I might even cry if I smashed any panels
in....lol. I saw some brand new Taco's carnage last year that if it
were mine tears would have been flowing for sure. I give all of you so
much credit for really using your rigs. It is simply awesome.
Richard

To everyone coming:
I wont be busting everyone ass to get anywhere in particular
throughout the trip. I do have a plan but we'll do what we can if
there are problems or larger than expected time delays. I also will be
respectful of the fact you all are not looking to bring home dents
etc. They may happen but I know I'll be trying to help you avoid them
if possible.

Just move the wedding to the rubicon, duh! It's cheaper that way too, even if you roll your truck, it's still cheaper!

If we have the Tacoma back together we'll try to come up but it's completely torn apart right now while we finish the cab and engine cage plus we're finishing up installing the Atlas and a bunch of other stuff. A 'con trip would be fun though that's for sure. Hopefully we can join you guys!

Just be sure to get in contact as least a week prior that is when I'm pulling out. We're going to pickup Casey in Truckee.

Its getting closer and closer now.

I've been curious about conditions up there. Is the trail going to be dry when we run it? I ask because I know there is still a lot of snow up in that general area and wouldnt want to run it before its a "cake walk" while in a sloppy muddy mess.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wont poor conditions (water, mud, etc) make the trip more of a headache than a good time? Especially for those who would not like to take home body damage.
