Ocotillo Wells is a good choice because it is central. I don't know how Ocotillo Wells is on non-holiday weekends, but at Thanksgiving, it is an incredible madhouse. Vehicles driving everywhere, and sometimes it becomes a complete dust bowl. (It's a fun place to visit at night.) I would recommend trying to find somewhere to camp near there, but away from "ground zero," the blow sands hill. Also, as of last year, the Ocotillo Wells gas station there had closed. If it hasen't re-opened, your closest gas will be Borrego Springs.
The Slot, a relatively short trip and a place I like to visit, is close to Ocotillo Wells. The Slot link 1 The Slot link 2

mike,
it is one of the most central places out there. i don't know about the ocotillo gas station, (good thinkin - didn't think about fuel yet), but there is the desert rose, (i am 90% sure they have gas) right out there a split mtn rd, right where fish creek, sandstone cnyn, heart attack hill, the squeeze all end up. the station is only a few minutes from ocotillo wells. they also have free air. if they don't have gas, there was another place a little further down hwy 78, and borrego like you said. i plan on bringing a couple of cans.
as far as the crowding issue, we shouldn't see it. that place is a madhouse every holiday. the calmest weekends are the ones immediately before and after the holiday weekends, which is good for us. the weekend planned is right before the halloween wknd, so it should be very calm out there.

I'd love to join ya for the 24-26 but I already have plans that weekend (but it's still pending)
I'm free on oct 10-12, 17-19 and nov 7-9, 14-16
Hope this helps....
Anyway hopefully Downey will have their stuff done so I can really test out the 03's abilities!!!
Looks like if this becomes a big turnout I might have to change my plans!
