Baja 1000
My bro and I are going....and are trying to figure out a few things...
1) Anyone else going who wants to connect?
2) Anyone know any teams who need support?
3) What do people think is the best "spectator" vehicle? We are trying to debate between van, ex-cab 4x4, subaru etc.
Thanks,
Adam

Didn't realize I could reply to this without RSVP'ing. Now i can't figure out how to un-RSVP.
I will be down there with a large group. Been down there at least once a year since 2000. Where will you be traveling from?
The proper vehicle will be one that you trust to get you there and back and the more offroad capable it is the better.

We'll be taking the long way there. Starting in Asheville, NC around Nov. 10 and heading to Prescott AZ to drop some valuables off with a relative. From there down to Baja, maybe through Tecate on our way to Ensaneda?
Not sure where we are going to post up for the race...begining, pit stop end?
After the race our plan is to head back to Prescott to pick our stuff up and then travel around the west a bit...maybe ride some bikes in Moab or Fruta, maybe do some climbing in Nevada at Red Rocks....not really sure yet.

That's way isn't so long. Came back that way, the last time I made the trip. Pretty country, in the Prescott area. I'm leaving here (Huntsville, AL) Thursday the 11th and traveling to San Diego, via I-40. Dropping the tow rig in San Diego, at friends house. Will be crossing the border, at TJ, a little after noon, on Saturday, Nov 13. May stay in Catavina that night or somewhere in between. Will be catching up with a group that is a day ahead of me. Our group is usually split into two. One group that sticks to the pavement and one group that takes every opportunity to be in the dirt, at a very aggressive pace. If you have a properly prepped vehicle and want to follow along, you're welcome to. We have a huge pit operation going on, way down in the back country of Baja Sur (southern state of baja).
I have to be back in San Diego, by Sunday, Nov 21, to drop people off at the airport. Not sure which day I will head back east. If the prerunner is doing ok, I may hit the dunes or just hang out around San Diego for a day or so. Definitely will be home by Thanksgiving.

Just be careful....people get killed every year from standing to close...and then some pimped out truck wrecks and takes 10 people out.
Situational awareness.

Some comments on vehicle requirements:
I've been all over the place down there, in anything from a stock VW beetle (rental), a stock ford ranger 2wd (rental), and a stock Jeep Liberty 2wd (rental), to a full blown prerunner. Biggest thing is to make sure it is very reliable. A friend will be driving my 2004 2wd Suburban and sticking with the mostly pavement group. I have a full tilt Toyota prerunner, with 5.0L ford drivetrain. I'll be with the dirt group. :^)
