26 Jan 08, The Great Western Trail - Seven Springs to Bloody Basin

When: 26 Jan 08

Where: A portion of the Great Western Trail - from Carefree, AZ. to either I-17 and Bloody Basin or, time permitting, all the way thru to Dugas and I-17.

Meeting point(s):

West side meeting point will be at I-17 and the Carefree Hwy at the Micky'D's at 8:30 AM, depart promptly at 9:00 AM.

East side meeting point will be at Cave Creek and Bartlet Dam Road a 9:00 AM, Depart when the west side group arrives, or 9:30 AM if we get there prior to that (unlikely!).

Vehicle Requirements:

A stock 4x4 SUV or truck will be fine. I'd like to see at least an AT tire and a good spare - no "P" rated stock tires please.

Comms: FRS Channel 1, privacy code 1, 2M - FWD 2 (146.460), CB Channel 8

Bring a lunch! This will be a full day trip, and has several creek crossings. Wet weather could make for a bit of mud here and there...

This is a 100% family freindly trail ride - nothing difficult as long as the weather holds. Current long range forecast show possible showers early in the week - that's be great for keeping the dust down.

Please be prepared for wet weather and daytime temps in the 40's to 50's. Looks like we'll be getting a few days of light showers before and during the trip!

Do you guys just take the 2WD dirt road past 7 Springs... and then just keep going?

What's the likelihood of going all the way to Dugas instead of Bloody Basin?

I always like to piece together sections of road throughout AZ. This might be an interesting opportunity to do just that.

Yup, ya just keep heading north. I'm currently planning on going out thru Dugas - the only thing that could change that is how good or bad road conditions are by then. The GWT to Dugas from Bloody Basin is a pretty fair trail - 2x4 no problem in dry weather. The GWT turns off Bloody Basin just before the eastern boundary of the Agua Fria NM.

use Google maps and input:

N Cave Creek Rd & Bartlett Dam Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85262

That's the eastern meeting point.

or,

Take I-10 to the Loop 101, then I-17 north towards Flagstaff, exit at the Carefree Hwy, turn right (east) at the interesection, and the Safeway/McDonalds is a 1/4 mile east and on the north side of the road. There is a gas station there too - I'll be topping off for sure.
