Rust on a 93? WTH are you guys talking about? I have seen rust on a 90's truck but that's what happens when you park and neglect a real truck under a tree and never wash the junk and leaves that cake up on it and it starts to corrode...
Not a "common" Toyota issue, other than a "common" moron owning the truck.
Rust is not common on those years of trucks... But it also depends on if it's been used in a salty climate and put away withOUT getting it off 1st.
The main thing you need to know is HOW to work on it. It has NOTHING in common with domestic junk and therefore requires new knowledge and understanding of how to maintain it.
2nd thing is its power. The 22RE while not powerful enough by Merican standards, will go almost for forever having had PROPER PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE.
And no, that does not mean run it till the T-chain breaks or the head gasket blows and you just slap another one on there without machining it 1st... Both popular options with dip-@#$% owners.
Finally, traction. All Toyota's came with open diffs. CONTRARY to popular belief you do not need 12" of lift and 44's to conquer most holes... As this will quickly add up to a dead 22RE and almost never ending spiral of money as you'll need gear$ and you'll want locker$... And a better clutch$ and cross member$... etc.
Get a locker and a nice well thought-out lift and you can still drive it.
Then you can pull up next to a 12" lift and 44" tire shod truck and ask him what his excuse is.

And, not only that, but you are trading WAY up by getting rid of that Jeep

if rust is not common on newer vehicles..........then why do the 3rd gen pickups have rust on them? as well as the 3rd gen 4runners (and 2nd gen 4runners) and 1st gen tacomas.
if if you wash your truck/4runner down real well, you can't ALWAYS get EVERY LITTLE BIT...and once rust starts, it'll go and go and go.

Define, 3rd gen? 3rd gen as-in 4WD? Or sarting all the way back?
And 2nd, we don't need to rehash all this Tacoma frames built by Dana junk...
Also, nothing new about 85-88 beds rusting... With the non one piece bed sides... The only time I've seen 89-95 beds rust is when the exhaust pipe tip has broke off and fumes coat the back side of the bed starting corrosion...
Ever notice it's driver side, right behind the rear wheel well?
EDIT: and yeah, there is the chrome bumpers Toyota saw fit to chrome on one side
Yes, all (89-95) Toyota chrome is a ticking time bomb...
Which reminds me... OP, starting with the Tacoma, Taco's are made in America, and the frames were made by Dana Manufacturing (of Dana Axle fame)... Your truck, with a 22RE was made in Japan.
The Tacoma's (95 and ^) are Merican... And coincidentally it's around this time many say Toyota's quality started slipping... hmmm.... Coincidence? I think not

tried, don't get technical, for all intensive purposes, this website refers to pickups as 1st gen...79-83, 2nd gen...84-88, 3rd gen...89-95 pickups, 1st gen 4runners...84-89, 2nd gen 4runners...90-95.
and no i don't notice anything about the exhaust rusting out the bedside, my buddies 94 pickup is rusted at the front fenders, bedsides all the way around at the bottom, bottom of the tail-gate, and both front and rear bumpers. it's NOT uncommon, in fact rust is probably more common of a problem than anything else with early (pre-95) Toyota's.

I have a 94 ex cab and it has been amaizing although without all of the work done to it that i have done it would be pretty trashed by now. learn as much as you can about the suspension, its difficult to lift very high with the ifs suspension in the front. i went with an axle swap so i didnt care about that stuff but make sure everything in the front has been taken care of.

My truck had a ton of motor problems when I got it, but a $400 motor from the junkyard fixed that
I have drove it ever since I got my license, and haven't had anything but a starter go bad(except for the motor of course but got it cheap that way), and I definately wasn't exactly nice to it. These truck are just built well, I don't know of any other explanation
always have dreamed of having a first gen 4runner though lol
