Looking into a 1972 Toyota Pickup

So a few weeks ago my 4runner died and i've been hunting for an affordable, older toyota pickup to drive around town this winter and a few times a week to the mountains in PA so go snowboarding.

I found a 1972 Toyota pickup, 1.6L 2wd 4spd man. (this is what the owner told me, i am not familiar with yotas this old) better yet, its within my price range and not far from home either. But obviously with a 40 yr old truck it'll need a little work.

The bad:
-fuel line that bolts to the carb leaks fuel (looks like a fairly simple fix)
-the air filter is too tall and does not bolt to the carb.
-the wiring has been screwed around with and needs to be cleaned up
-rear windshield is not in the truck (but the owner does have the glass. I cannot find a gasket for the glass though)
-unknown miles (the odo only reads to 99,999.9 and rolls back over to 0. It read 56K but neither of us could determine how many times it had reset)
-the paint is a shoddy orange over bondo work but appears he's taken care of ALL the rust (quite far from perfect)
-the seats are pretty bad but i can swap em with something else (he put in a lincoln rear bench seat wrapped over the factory 72 seat frame. the back of the seat is almost 4" thick and at 6' i was at the windshield)

The good

-the truck started right up and ran pretty well
-The trans shifted through all of the gears fairly easily
-absolutely no frame rust that i could find
-the bed was solid and not a spot of rust inside it.
-cab seemed rust free
-windshield was new
-dist. plugs and wires were replaced when he purchased the truck 4 years ago
-tires were new with only 500 miles
-chrome moon rims

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Im basically unsure whther i should buy it or not. He's asking $1500 and i wanna take it down to about $1000 unless you guys say otherwise. Again i dont know much about the 1st gen pickups and could use any help i can get.

What not buy a 2wd from 80's or 90's that won't need so much work and constant maintenance?

$500 tops in good condition and then it's a waste of money IMO
