Bump, this requires your attention.
I believe that the military needs land for training, but just leave the Hammers alone.

You can trail a million other places. They want it so they can go out and play with it and waist even more money. Homeland is important but they dont need to take this land for it

Bottom line here is that the govt, pretty much does what it wants. I've never been to the hammers, nor do I know where it is(northern California, that's it), and I don't have any plans to visit it in the near future, but I think it shoud remain open, and in the hands of the public.
The military has many other locations that they can train on, hell, if I had 1,000 acres to spare, I'd let em train on that, but being that i"m probably only a few hundred miles away from this, it affects me. What is wrong with using a closed military base for training purposes?

I too think it's a little crazy to just take away that much pristine OHV playground just because they can. I've never been to The Hammers either, but I truly enjoy my off-roading experiences and can sympathize with those at risk of losing their area. Also, I'd like to have the opportunity to go there in the future when my beast is up to the trip. I'll be showing my support at the Vrally for sure on the 12th. Andy

I too think the military deserves the best training BUT there are plenty of places that can expand to that doesnt involve getting rid of places like JV. I dont have the exact quote on me but from the USMC's plan on their website, the expansion is to allow 3 battalions 36 hours of training as opposed to 2 battalions 28 hours of training (what they currently have).
Johnson Valley is located in Southern California and is largely renowned as the most hardcore/extreme trail on the West Coast. Thank you everyone who will participate. It will be a long time before I have the time nor the money to take a trip down to JV, but I hope when that time comes the Hammers will still be there.

If they take away the land from the people, whose homeland are they protecting? Public land should be exactly that: public. I'd participate, but I don't think the US government would car what a Canadian has to say...

No no no!! You are missing the point! Every voice counts, even though you dont live in the USA, the fact that you would be willing to spend big $$$ to travel all the way there and spend more of $$$ is what counts. We are trying to show everyone, not just the USMC that we have numbers, we play a lot, and we put a lot of money into local economies. please participate, even if you feel your voice matters not, it does. We need all the help we can get.

I especially like this part:
Why am I doing this if I have never been to the Hammers? During the ELDO fiasco last summer, I asked for help in chit-chat. People asked me, “Why should we help you guys? Where were YOU when OUR trails were being closed?” After I though about it, they were right. Where was I? It seems that we only fight for our own backyards. Not anymore. I promised the PBB in that thread I would fight route closures EVERYWHERE. So I am. ...and he is right. We all need to start thinking in terms of the whole community, not just our own immediate, local concerns.

regretfully i cannot make it, due to work, but theyd better not close that trail. and for TRAINING purposes? they have ENOUGH 'training terrain' in NEVADA!!! its hard to find a place to 4x4 out here due to the thiefment taking everything for itself. i mean hell most of nevada that isnt populated is owned by the military.. sucks

before 9/11 you COULD 4x4 on Ft. Lewis.. not the restricted parts but they have A LOT of land dedicated to Ft. Lewis and you can NO LONGER mess around out there. You cant go play on the forest roads and WAVE and bs with the troops. now you get arrested and fined hardcore.
SAD to say the least, it irrates the $^$%&^%$#%*U@#$$#@$#$% out of me to no end but thats the price we pay for others #%%$%^&$%%$ ups. ie terrorist. The people who trash the remaining trails and areas we are allow to play also SUCK and if i caught someone dumping trash on one my trials id probably be in jail for murder.. if they found the body. It sickens me. I cant make the rally that pisses me off to cuz i work. If I someonhow get there when it goes down i will post. It's already hard enough to find good places to wheel here. To take our woods away anywhere agravates me.

I would have to see the exact reasoning behind WHY they need to claim this NEW land for training purposes.
I really don't see how this has a lot do with supporting troops or not supporting them. What could they possibly need that area for? The government already has to much power over the people.

Well, today is the rally. I hope everything goes well.
Why can't the military use the area for a couple weeks and give it back? That would be fair to all wouldn't it? Maybe we can get them to "Tread lightly"

Yes! Thank you! Anybody else what to stand up for their wheeling rights?
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=664629 Don't just lurk, or you may find yourself lurking on the otherside of a fence on lands you used to wheel on! Just post something postive, even if you have never been there. If they can take a place as huge as Johnson Valley here, what's to stop them from taking your backyard wheeling area there??
