F J ... (fugimoto) fugi jeep
... of course petrol and the frames are interesting ideas. This japanese based vehicle was a serious upgrade from the war vehicle willys that was only good in korean crappy terrain, to a much better stronger longer mountain climber, the front was even fashioned to look like a japanese warrior, yep, the fuji jeep is a cool bad machine, joked about, long ago, when 1st starting out, for trying to be called a jeep before it really stacked up, and before it surpassed all expectations, they merged its name with the very successful european land rover, they named the toyota the F J land cruiser, but knowing it was to become a killer jeep, and being originated near fugimoto, the mountain it 1st conqured and blew everyones mind, it took on the call letters F J fuji jeep

In land cruisers the first letter or two letters of the chassis code is the engine family that is in the cruiser and the j stands for Jeep. So fj40,50,60,70,80 have a F serries inline 6 and are a jeep chassis. The number is then the generation. So currently land cruisers are UZJ100 and UZJ200 for the full size. This is due to having a UZ family V8 and 200 is the newest series. If you wanted to apply that naming method to an FJ Cruiser it would be a GRJ120. Since it has a 1GR family engine and it is based on the J120 land cruiser prado. But toyota does not use a land cruiser naming method on it. The FJ Cruiser model name is just a made up name to try and evoke the nostalgia of the FJ40 series land cruiser.

I have read that Toyota denies that the "J" stands for Jeep, however I am pretty sure it does as Toyota called the "pre" Land Cruiser military vehicles Jeeps before they had to change the name.
Toyota then decided to called the "civilian" version of their Jeep the Land Cruiser.
The rest, as they say, is history!
