I need help with backup light wiring
Hi Yotatech,
So I got a PIAA 4040 backup light as a christmas present today and I just couldn't wait to install it. I have everything hooked up correct except for the darn power lead from the backup light. Can someone please verify that the power going to the backup light is a red and blue wire on a 97 4Runner? I have tried tapping into two red and blues and I get no voltage on the multimeter when I put the truck in reverse. My chilton's manual also makes no mention of a backup light in the diagrams. I see on the factory backup light that there is a red/blue wire coming in as the positive so I am pretty sure that it's gotta be red/blue a bit further up the line(under the driver side seats). Does anyone recommend a good tap-in connector. I think that might be my problem... Just a recap in case somethin was not clear, I have a 1997 4Runner and I am trying to wire the switch on my PIAA 4040 so that my light cuts on when I hit reverse on the tranny. Thanks!

Well, Wabbit, I was kind of being a smart ass with my first reply... But I went and did what you said and of course it worked! I was trying to avoid pulling all the interior panels out just to follow the wire but now I realize that was the best way to make sure your stuff will work. Things get messed up in a world that is not perfect and of course the wire changed colors almost immediately upstream. I ended up tapping into the power right at the backup light and all is well. I love my new light, it makes so much difference. I highly recommend adding a backup light to anyone. Thanks Wabbit.

No worries, I work with them all day long so I'm used to it! I knew that the wires changed colors from out of the taillight assembly as I've put in several sets of reverse lights on several different gen 4runners, but didn't know what colors they changed to on your particular rig, so telling you what I did was the only way for you to find out the colors on your rig. Glad it worked out!
