H4 headlight hi/low delay

Hi guys, I just bought a new (to me) 93 sr5 3.slow today.... picked it up and had a 400 km drive back home. The only problem I am having is with the lights. They say on the headlight glass H4, so I am assuming they were at one point converted from the sealed beam headlights to these. The lighting is terrible, not bright enough AT ALL on the highway at night. This is my second yota of this vintage and my old one had "diamond cut" ebay headlights and they were brighter than these!! I know there is a mod for better wiring and I am thinking that might be what needs to be done, or an HID conversion... BUT on the other had I noticed when i switched from low beam to high beams, the headlights actually go BLACK for a fraction of a second before the high beam flicks on. Vice versa when swtiching from Hi to Lo beam. What could be the cause of this? Could it just be a bad set of H4 bulbs? Thanks!

If I were to guess, and this is just a guess, I'd go with the headlight relay. I'd have to double check my wiring diagrams to see, though.

As for the H4 conversion kits, that's what it sounds like you have. I quite like mine, so if you're getting poor output, it reinforces my belief that it's in your wiring or relay.

im a firm believer in hid's and i have alot of experience with them. I could certainly help you and answer any questions as far as HID goes. the output will certainly be much better than halogens, especially with a retrofit. as far as the delay between the beams, im thinking its the switch. Its not making a good connection as soon as you switch to highs. Hook a multimeter to the h4 socket and flip your beams, see if there is a momentary drop. if its a steady stream without interruption its your bulbs. You should deffinatly fix any electrical issues before considering HID conversions first though.
