Another speedometer thread

I've searched and read the other speedo threads but here is mine. I swapped in a 3.0L JDM turbo diesel. All the gauges work except for the speedo. The 'o/d off' light blinks when I drive it and I checked the code, it's a 42 which is for a bad speed sensor in the combination meter (or cluster). Is there a way to check the speedo to make sure that is the problem, or has anyone else dealt with this? Is it possible that it is the VSS in the tranny and not the speedo one? Thanks!

It the VSS is on the speedo, it is just a separate unit attached to the back of the speedo. If it is in the tranny (actually t-case in 4WD) it is a module that is screwed onto the t-case with wires coming out, otherwise you have a speedo cable that attaches to the t-case. And you can convert between the two:

Thanks, I also posted this on toyota diesel, but being this is a standard toyota problem, some of the guys here seem to tinker a little more with stuff, or at least there are more people here.

so are you saying that the speedo vss is a replaceable piece without putting in a different speedo? That is what I was hoping. BTW I have the electric speedo set up in this.
