Wheel backspacing Q: 4.25" vs. 4.5"

I'm looking at a set of 16x8 rims with a backspacing of 4.25". I believe that most 16x8 rims for my year use a 4.5" backspacing. I've done some searching, but can't find a clear answer as to which direction the wheel shifts when the backspacing is reduced: inboard or outboard? Does the 4.25" b/s have a wider track than the 4.5?

Good news, because the 4.25 spaced wheel is 1/2 the price of the other one, so that's really the one I wanted, heh.

I just found out why they're so much cheaper, they're steel wheels and not alloy. Bummer, gotta have alloy rims.
