It's the Hino (Toyota subsidiary) 8 liter J08C-TI L6 that produces 706 ft./lbs. @ 1,500 rpm.
I spoke with a rep at the stand who said they had lines of buyers all day, every day, wanting to place deposits at any price. It was a mistake for Toyota to display it IMO. It won't be out for a year and based on SEMA interest and blog posts, will only generate frustration for those waiting. They usually play it closer to the vest.

...would this sell?
Every Toyota and Nissan forum on the internet rants and whines about not having a HD diesel offering.

I just vomited a little in my mouth when I saw that.....again..... I would go to Toyota and slap it's CEO in the face if I ever saw one of those things out in daylight....

GenXr is right. It's big, powerful, and gives a false sense of dominance. There's tons of rich, self-conscious wannabe badasses who'd line up to get one, just like with the big dodge's and superduty's that people buy and never really use for their intended purpose.

Way better looking than the production Tundra's, I notice they fixed up the grille, hopefully this is a view of things to come.
Power isn't great, but I didn't expect it to be. Toyota diesel outputs have been pretty disappointing. Though if they have to detune it to 600 ft-lbs to make it dead reliable and get good fuel economy I'm sure they'll find tons of buyers.
Look at the sales numbers for diesels - Ford 275k annually, GM 150k annually, Dodge 145k annually. That's a big market!
