transmission fluid change?

okay so i am planning on getting my fluid changed today because it is really turning dark on me...

i cant do this myself, so i have to take it somewhere, but i want to call around first to check prices.

what questions should i ask?

is there a transmission "filter" that needs to be changed too?

is there any particular brand i need to ask for? does it matter?

ive also just read an article that said that a transmission "flush" is not needed at all.
im guessing theres a difference between "flushing" and "draining"?

edit: with more research ive come upon this....

http://www.gadgetonline.com/TransFlush.htm

they say that if your tranny fluid is black etc, dont change it. the tranny is toast...
great.
im really mad right now.

Do NOT "flush & fill" the tranny. This puts it under pressure and causes sediment to get moved around that probably shouldn't. The best thing would be to have it 'drained' and then filled. You may find a shop that will drain and fill and replace the filter for you as well. May not be needed, but can't hurt.

a DIY flush will not hurt the tranny. You're simply using the tranny pump to pump fluid through it's normal path and removing some of the fluid at the disconnected cooler line, then adding the same amount to the tranny through the dipstick. Read all about it here.

...and yes there is a filter, but it typically doesn't need to be replaced. It is a fine mesh screen filter that can be cleaned and re-used. You have to drop the tranny pan to clean it, though.
