How many of you all carry a full, spare gas can on a normal basis? Do most of you all just carry a full one on the trail? Where do you carry it? How big is it? For you truck owners, is it a bad idea to leave a full spare can in the tool box? Would that get too hot? Thanks!

i wouldn't recommend carrying a gas can inside your tool box, if it leaks, vapors can build up and create a dangerous situation.

i usually dont need one/carry one when wheeling in the midwest.

when i head out west i carry (2) 5 gallon NATO cans packed into the bed somehow. location changes depending on what other gear im carrying.

where's a good place to buy a 5gal metal can? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

I sometimes carry a Blitz 5+ gallon plastic gas can for extra fuel. It fits under the tonneau cover and goes in the corner where it can't tip over easily. The only problem with it is that it's hard to get all the fuel out. The spout won't bend far enough to get the can upside down to drain it all out. I end up siphoning the last of the fuel out to get it all.

you may be out of luck in california, probably have to cross the state lines to find a "good" can instead of that ventless BS.

I got the "carb approved" nozzle for it. COMPLETE PIECE OF DUNG.
It very effectively kept vapors from escaping. But the nozzle wasn't long enough to get into the gas tank, so instead of letting some miniscule amount of vapor escape, I poured gasoline all over the truck, the street, my shoes....

I then just ordered the non-carb one, neglecting to mention that I was in california. Arrived no problem, much happier.

They have the metal blitz cans too, but if you just want those, go to central 4wd (one of them on auburn, and there's another one somewhere off of I-80) and get it directly.

I have a 5gal plastic can that I got at Kragen's Auto parts right before the DV trip. I only take it when I'm going to be spending the night on the trail since that usually means more driving during the day. Only thing I don't like about mine is that I need the extended nozzle (which is not permanently attached to the can ) to completely drain the can. I just ratchet strap it to the side of my bed.

Storing it in a tool box is a bad idea IMHO.

I have a gas can in the back of my dads pickup at all times, because his trucks gas gauge doesn't work. I haven't seen it empty yet, but my fear is that somebody will either swipe it or put all the gas in their car, and then drive away leaving me with an empty can.

I carry the gas can but I never have gas in it unless I expect to go on a long trip where gas can be scarce, like DV. It's too dangerous to keep gas like that.

You can't get the good gas cans in Ca, too many eco nazi's. And like scottiac said, the bad ones spill everywhere and leak. I imported mine from Arizona.

Actually, the place I mentioned will ship the good cans to California... But I was trying to be a good Kaleefornian and get the CARB nozzle. That was the part that stunk. The can itself has been excellent. Now that I have an "illegal" nozzle, all is good.

The specter water cans, on the other hand, leak like crazy... WTF?

i went down to central off of hwy 50 (on folsom blvd) and they want $60 for the blitz can. forget that. i'll check out that link you posted.

I have the 2.5 gallon plastic Sceptor cans starpped to my cargo basket when need be, but that is not often.

TJM makes a nice plastic can as well.

Also, I never bother with the spouts. I always just usa a "magic siphon".
