Alright guys well i bought some rubbing compound today and gave it a shot.

The good - my rims are really shiny now

The bad - it didn't work and it actually made my wheels look worse (you can tell more of the clearcoat is cracking now)

Yeah, now i have some rubbing compound lol I guess its time to try the paint stripper unless someone has a better idea.

I would use a chemical stripper on the inner rim thats peeling, then sand and re coat. I have the same prob. The inner aluminum is pealing, outer steal is OK

so i had very nasty american racing rims and wanted to clean them up. my buddy does body work and said lets paint them. so he called napa got this wicked rugged chemical for etching aluminum and i cleaned then down to bare metal. then we sprayed them with a 1 stage black gloss. results were great.

teuf are those wheels the AR outlaw 1's? Have you had them in some think mud? how do they due with mud build up behind them? I am thinking they would be better than the wagon wheels I got now.

And to stay on topic, something good to use would be some nevr-dull (the real stuff not some knockoff brand) and a polishing ball attached to a drill.

Having been in the Navy, I am infinately familiar with Nevr-Dull

Lord I remember that stuff, probably have some in a foot locker. And the rims hold no mud to speak of. Ps there is no mud in Napa Ca. think there a discontinued American racing rim, been so long I forget.

I'm not sure that stuff will work, i need to fix the cracking clearcoat. I think that would just make the wheels shiny lol. Maybe ill just say hell with it and get them powdercoated.

But you still have to get the cracking coat off. The neverdull works good on the outer steal part.

I don't think paint thinner is gonna work, probably need a regular paint stripper. Something like this from Home Depot:
