Rack or No Rack for my 1st Gen... What do you think?

Title says it all really...

Should I fab up a safari rack for my 1st gen... or no? Let's hear your opinions...

I don't intend to ever put on the shell, so it'll be running open even if it rains... which is hardly ever around where I live.

Below is a rough photoshop'd version of what it will look like...

I'd love to do something like that...... Is that a Downey Bikini top?? I have a Downey one exactly like that.

I haven't had the top on my truck for almost 2 years. But, I'd still like to have the option to put it back on if need be. you could make the vertical supports so that they bolt into the roof's mounting holes. I fab'd up some grab handles that use the lowest hole on the back of the cab area, and the 2nd back mounting hole for the top and they just bolt on when I don't have the top on.

Yeah it's the Downey Bikini Top. I had to re-drill holes on the support bar since it sat in an angle when I first installed it. I'm not sure if that's they way it was designed or they goof'd. Either way, it's completely aligned with the roofline now.

If you look closely, I drew the vertical supports in the photo. It's exactly how you described it... with the grab handles.. which by the way is a great idea. a couple of "Oh Sh_t" bars would be nice. lol.

Thanks for your suggestions....

Great idea but it might give you problems on the trails.
Trees and what not will get caught up easier.

Thanks Gilby....

Yota Tony.. Great Point!!! I'll have to reconsider that. But the only other alternative to avoiding trees and what not on the trails would be to not install it... or am I over looking something?

Keep em coming folks...

Well just make sure it's firmly mounted to avoid damage to your truck.
On the trail watch out for large brenches.

OH absolutely...

If the shooting targets I welded together can stand up to a .308 rifle, then I'm sure my welds will hold up to a few tree branches.
