Hey'all. My truck died the other day, so I tested some components and the ignition coil was bad. Replaced that, and the only way now I've been able to get it to run is to crank down the distributor so that it's 20-25 degrees BTDC. Otherwise, it won't start, and if I switch it to say 10 deg, it bogs down when I hit the gas. I check the vacuum advance, no problem there. Blew a bunch of carb cleaner through the carb (thought maybe a jet was stuck). Looked at the timing belt, thinking that may have slipped, but the crank and camshafts were in line and there was no noticeable wear on the belt. What the hell is going on here? I thought for sure it was a distributor issue, given that it would work but only at such a crazy advance. Then I thought the carb, but I can't find anything wrong with it. Help would be incredibly appreciated!!!

My suggestion is go back and dead time the motor making sure T-belt is right on and then check distributor rotor position pointing at #1 in cap. Is it possible that the gear pin on dist shaft spun?

when you are setting the timing is that 20 BTDC with or without the vacuum lines attached to the carb?

Hey guys thanks for the thoughts. It's possible the pin swung, but I don't think so. The 20-30 is with vacuum lines on. With them off it's around 15-20. Any other thoughts aside from dead timing it, which is probably the best option?

Carb?
This is a 22R right?
3VZE's didn't come carbed
And 22R's don't have timing belts..
Did your timing CHAIN jump a tooth?
Have you pulled the valve cover to check?
With the crank pointed straight up the arrow on the top timing gear should point straight up, too.

What are you working on? This does not sound like a 22R or 3VZ. Are you sure you are timing it on the #1 cylinder? If this is a V6 or V8 it would be easy to try and time it off a differnt cylinder, which is why it would appear so advanced.
