99 4runner vs 88 4 runner

I have a 1988 v6 4runner with a freshly rebuilt motor, pretty decent shape for year.i have a guy wanting to trade me a 1999 4runner 3.4 4x4 auto 3" suspension and 3"BL on 35's for my 1988 4runner.I have always had the pre 1988 Toyota trucks so am not up on this setup .is the 1999 with the auto a decent setup for Offroad use? It also has the ADD front axle.

As far as capability and reliability go, I think they are about equal. (by vehicle value standards it's nearly a steal to trade straight up on a 10 year newer vehicle). But the 3.4 v6 is a big leap in power.

I personally like the aesthetics of the 1st gen, but I think I would be torn if offered the same trade you've been offered.

seems around here that the older trucks/4runners are catching up and passing the 10 year newer trucks/4runners in "market" value.Just like the Jeeps, its not uncommon to get $5-6000 for a clean 1992 Wrangler and see 1997-2000 jeeps for the same price.more interested in durability/problems with newer auto and transfer cases.Replacement stuff for my 1988 is an easy find for me ,but my left knee is killing me and need an automatic soon.Dont know also how an auto with stock gears turns 35" tires offroad?

tough decision for sure, with out knowing mileage and stuff.
i will say that the 1st gen is not depreciating anymore, but the 3.4 is much more able to pull and accellerate.

then again you can find a newer runner easily, still lots to choose from, not so for the 1st gen.

the 1st gen runner that looks as good as yours is money and you will miss it.

in a perfect world you should just buy the newer runner and keep that gem for occasional sunday drives.

3.4 auto swap = best of both worlds.

in ten years the 88 will be worth more imo.

Nice 1st gens are harder to find.
Nice 3rd gens are a dime a dozen still.
Keep the 88.

x2! That's a tough decision. I say stick with what you have and if you really like the lift and mud terrain style, look into lifting yours. Your truck looks very clean as is and if you want to add to it, it'll be more "rewarding" IMO, in the long run. HOWEVER, i'm a sucker for 4 doors and comfort so as previously stated, that is definitely a tough one.

looked it over today,it has a 3" BL and 2-3" steel coil spacers, stock gears,ADD,rubs a bit,has some type of wheel spacer in front so the 15" wheels would clear the calipers, would not be able to be wheeled at all ,170k miles, cloth seats, decent if I was to never go offroad but would prob kill me in fuel.Gonna stick with my old schhol runner, thanks all

I would be asking myself why someone would want to trade up for a vehicle ten years older than his , and what he knows about his vehicle that you don't know .

Tell him to kick in a grand , and he has a deal .

P.S. Great looking 'runner

That 3.4 is a nice step up in pep to be sure , but you got a CLEAN runner there , if he really wants your rig he'll add some ca$h to persuade you .

Keep the 88. Save up for a 3.4 swap in a couple years. Even if you did it now, you could sell your 3.0 to someone and make back most of your money. I have a 3.4 swapped 1st gen and I also have a 2000 highlander (sport) 4runner. I would prefer the 87 any day of the week.

His 99 highlander looks nice. Does it have an elocker?

Not to mention, you can take your top off. Thats somthing the newer stuff just dont do no more. Either way both can be built. Or motor swaped and built. No trade.

Red face

Given the Choice I would rather have a 1st gen 4runner then the 99 I see a 3.4 in a 87 4Runner in the future.

I am going with a 3.4 over a 7MGTE that I have sitting here ready to start.
