2nd Gen 4Runner Fan Pulley
Hey guys, my truck abruptly stopped running on Tuesday, and I have a couple of questions.
I have a '91 4Runner with the 3.0 VZE engine, and the symptoms are as follows:
1. Squalling (as if from a belt slipping)
2. Fan and Fan Clutch rocking back and forth while the engine is running
3. Sudden seizure and engine dies.
Originally we thought that the water pump had gone bad, so we are in the process of taking everything off to replace the water pump (we are going to replace the timing belt at the same time).
We took the fan off, and the Fan Pulley Bracket, and here is where we found a discrepancy. After we took the Fan Pulley Bracket off, we found a small piece of metal that looked like it had been shorn off. We then proceeded to spin the pulley, and to our surprise, it rattled and ground while spinning, and then it abruptly stopped. We have surmised that the Fan Pulley is bad.
My question is this. Can I get by without the fan pulley? It runs the alternator and power steering pump. The alternator also runs around the crank pulley, but the Power Steering Pump is fun solely off of the fan pulley. If I get a shorter belt I can run the alternator off of the Crank Pulley also, but I want to get some ideas on this. If I can run these two items off of the crank pulley, then I will buy some shorter belts and an electric fan.
Thanks for your advice and ideas.
