To my knowledge of owning two first gens and also by looking in the online parts catalogue, there was no "base" model. There was only Deluxe and SR5.

I'll try to find the link but I think it actually started a couple of years earlier as an upgraded Toyota Corolla.

check this one out:

Sr5 on the seats, but has the deluxe model/basic console. Seat swap perhaps? Those aren't Sr5 wheels either, but there was another guy selling one in the classifieds here that had wheels like that and he said it was an sr5.

I called about it and asked and the salesman got angry and upset. He told me "it is what it is" and "I'm not going to pick apart a 20 year old vehicle". Then he hung up on me.

What a jack-hole. The thing has 90xxx miles on it. I seriously would have considered purchasing it if I could have found out the real deal on it.

I was contemplating a carfax to see what it turned up, but I wouldn't buy it from that guy. wow.

Either the VIN or the plate in the engine bay will tell you if it is a SR5 or Deluxe.

got a 84 4 runner SR5 with the following

chrome package (bumpers, trim, wheels)
cloth seats (driver's seat lumbar and lower back support)
carpet
instrumentation (tach, oil, water charge)
intermit wipers
tilt steering
power windows (vent / heater but no a/c, door locks)
power steering
power antenna

the SR5 option was a package that was a upgrade over the deluxe model. there were still options offered that was not part of the SR5 package and was offered as a extra (ie a/c. curise control)
