used engine, what to look for

I will be looking for an engine (22rec) to put in an 88 yota pickup, block has a hole in it and head got really hot. most engines people have for sale are not able to crank and run. of course it was running great when they wrecked the truck. is there any tests that you can do to see if the motor has any major problems? I don't mind doing a little work on the engine while it was out of the vehicle. getting the head reworked would probably be a good investment. I just don't want to have the added cost of getting it bored and new pistons put in it.the body of the truck is in rough shape so a 1700 crate engine is not in it's future. just looking for suggestion for now.

run a compression and leakdown test if possible, that'll give you a good idea as to the condition of the engine.

can you turn an engine with a wrench on the crank and get an acurate reading on compression? always wanted to build an engine. with the advice and good help on these forums I just may try it. so far i have rebuilt solid front axle and installed locker, rebuilt rear axle and welded, installed high steer, dual t-cases, built drop spring hanger for front, fixed head gasket and several other small things all with just the help of people on different forums and fsm. never had anyone show me how to do these things in person. some of the write ups and pics are really good. If I had a good step by step procedure with pics on building an engine I would be set.
