Truck wont start

Truck wont start
So I have a 1991 toyota pick up. Its been an awesome truck and I have not had to do much to it till now
I blew my alternator a couple days ago. (I used a D/C voltmeter and was not getting any charge when running) So I have been rechargeing my battery with a trickle charger overnight till today when I got my new alternator and put it in. I had to pull off the distributor cap to get at it and when I put it back together i put one of the spark plug leads in the wrong spot....... It didnt start so I got out checked and put it back properly. Could I have fried somthing?
I went out and got another cap and through it on but it still wont start. It turns over like its about to then smells like it floods and wont start. Any ideas?

it was only a spark plug wire. Its weird it turns like its gonna start but wont then wreaks of gas like i flooded it. I was just running it yesterday and all I did was swap the alternator, charged the battery and removed and replaced the distributor cap.

you didn't loosen the distributor itself before you decided to take the cap off did you? or forget to put the rotor back on the distributor? also if you didn't remove the rotor from the distributor then make sure you didn't bend the tab on the rotor. And double and triple check to make sure you got the firing order right with the plug wires. Crossing them will not cause you to fry something. Also make sure the coil wire on the coil side didn't pull out of the coil at all. It comes out really easy even though it looks like it's in there correct. I have problems with mine every time I have to mess with the plug wires.

Nope I didnt touch the distributor, just the cap. I dont think I got anywhere near the rotor but I will do a better check. Is there anywhere I can get a diagram or picture of the wires just to make sure I put them all back properly? I am pretty sure I got them all back in place but.......I have been know to make a mistake or two here and there!!!

take plugs off, use a lighter and burn the gas off of the electrodes and see if it'll start. if you flooded it, it may have just fouled the plugs while you were trying to get it to run without the proper ignition leads hooked up.

I also have a 22re and it was running but seem to take a little longer to start and now it won't start. Just turns over and over. Was running a little rough after it warmed up at idle. I hear a click noise which sounds like it's coming from under the passenger side dash after I turn it over to try and start it and then turn it off. Just bought the pick up used and must a got took. So I know this is a little late... well really late!!! It turned out I didn't mess anything up well changing over the alternator. It was a whole other problem.......yeah AWESOME!!!
Here was the new mystery. I would start my truck, run it for a day, then the next day it wouldn't start. Or sometimes I would go to leave my house for work and it wouldn't start.
Everyone said "Oh dude its your ignition switch".........changed that over...wasn't it!!
Everyone said "Oh dude its your starter".....changed my starter........still had the same problem
So I ran a wire from my positive battery terminal to my starter lead and it started. I did this little circus show for a week till I could get it to a mechanic. I told them all of this and that the truck had an alarm with an immobilizer on it. I asked if the immobilizer could have gone faulty or something? Because after changing the alternator I heard a weird wuuurrrring sound under the dash.
After a week in the shop this was their answer....
" umm yeah......we don't know whats wrong with it......so we installed a push button in place of the wire you had from the battery.........$159.99 please"
I'm guessing its a short somewhere. Sometimes I can use the ignition normally and sometimes I have to use the push button. been that way ever since.

If the truck has a auto trans the neutral safety switch can get out of adjustment or wore and cause this problem . Sometimes putting in neutral will work. A friend had two 86 4x4 autos one started sometimes and the the other had to use the push button all the time.

No there is a switch on the clutch but the shop should have check it. I did not see any info on the trans type, so I took a shot in the dark. It helps to post what your truck has in it when asking questions, so the problem can hopefully be resolved.
