Truck top speed is only 65-70?
Very informative site!! I'm gathering alot of answers. This is my 1st Toyo(much diff than all my 81-87 Chevys)Anyway, Im driving it home to look at my new ride and I'm only getting 65-67mph! Surely thats not right. Pretty much stock 88 4x4 w/31/10.5/15 & 4.10gearing. Idles fine & seems to run fine (sluggish, but smooth).I also notice coolant left front, top corner is soaked but none on ground...water pump looks new...any ideas or nature of the beast? Thanks

Sounds like a case of the 22REs. Shoulda bought one with the V6.
That's a lot of weight to be pushing around with a four banger...

Rebuilt 22r with LCE head and Header with full exhaust with stock gears and 33s. I can run 65 up hill and barely 80 down hill. But mostly Im about 70 at 3K rpms in 4th on flat freeway.

I had to take a picture when my truck was at a constant 70, on flat freeway, even! I was shocked!!! Ever since Blackie got timingchainitis, I didn't think it was possible to go that fast ever again.

Yeah, they're slow, but with an un-lifted truck on 31's, you should be able to do better than that. I could easily, smoothly cruise at 75mph in my 86 EFI extra cab w/ 31's. On flat ground, anyways...
But, compression needs to be good, valves adjusted, good air filter, plugs, wires cap & rotor. Timing correct. No brakes sticking/grabbing, and no wheel bearings about to go out.
Like I said, flat ground, my 86 22RE could get 24mpg highway, 75mph. Always a dog climbing hills, but it always got me there. Even in my current '83 22R, I can easily get up over 80mph on a slight decline. 75mph no problem on flat ground or even a slight uphill. That's not to say that in that truck I feel safe at that speed...but I can get there

Sounds like a tired engine.
My 3vze topped out at 105mph downhill (speed limiter i think)... flat it could hit 95 no problem...
my 5vzfe hits the 105mph redline on flat ground no problem... haven't tried that in awhile... "closed course"

jsut sounds tired man, the coolant thing could be a few things, since the timing just got done, I would guess the didnt get the timing cover sealed up real good on reassymbly. 70 mph for a tired 22re isnt bad, that's what I was running with 250xxx on my motor. Did a full rebuild with some add ons and now I can pull up hill in 3rd doing 75 no problem. hit 4th and loose some of the umph but will still pull 90 in 4th up hill.

92 22RE 4 inch lift on 35s.- Performance throttle body from LCEngineering LCEngineering stage 2 cam.
The day I bought my truck did 70-75 all the way from Austin to New Braunfels. Thought my speedometer was off so I checked it with my GPS to find it was exactly 10 miles off. When I do 60 I'm actually going 70

my completely stock 86 pickup with a 22r and a 5 speed can get 80 easy. I could prolly go faster but I just dont want to push it too hard. But I cruise the interstate at 75 everyday to and from work. It runs a little over 3000 rpms.
