I am thinking about trying it myself. Any tips, or hints on this repair?

Replace the rest of the clutch, and the crankshaft pilot bearing, and rear seal if it's leaking, while you're there. You don't want to be taking the tranny out again in a few months. If it's a 4wd the tranny and transfer case are heavy and awkward to move around, a tranny jack is useful. The upper bell housing to engine bolts are a pain to get at. You can either use lots of extensions and go in through the hole in the floor where the shifter goes, or wiggle your arm up the side of the engine and get them that way. Mark the driveshaft flanges before removing them, putting them back a different way can cause vibration.

There are probably a couple of other things but that's all I can think of this early in the morning.

Is a Haynes/Chilton manual enough for this job? Or, am I going to need any extra documentation. Back in college and highschool. I helped rebuild engines and transmissions, but always had the help and guidence of an instructor.

Just wanting to make sure I can put it back together.

I used a Haynes or Chilton for my 1993 4Runner and it was fine.

The most difficult part for me was getting the tranny to line back up with the bell housing when I was putting it all back together.

I read a tip where you get a couple of longer bolts, cut off the heads and thread them into the bell housing. These bolts will act as guides to make it all line back up again.

I haven't tried it yet, but seems to be a helpful bit of advice.

Why did you take the bell housing off of the tranny? You only have to seperate the bellhousing and the engine. The bell housing should stay attached to the tranny when you pull it.

Sorry, I mistyped.

Bellhousing stays on tranny... I had trouble lining the housing back up to the block.
