I pulled a 87 4x4 pick up on a tow dolly with my 22re 4 runner .
The only thing is you just have to plan and look ahead and not get worried at the people behind you . I saw no reason to have the transfer case in anything but 2wd .
I would come down off the hills in Eastern Pa in first gear and not touch the brakes .
That said I have been doing this kind of driving for 20 plus years and it sort of becomes a habit

I towed a POS Taurus, heavy as balls like Stan's from South Park, with a V6, stock gears, and 35 inch tires up hills fine.
My '88 Camry, 4cyl, auto pulled my truck up a hill fine.

I have been pulled around town with a tow strap. It works alright, you just have to be careful, and let the vehicle being towed do most of the braking when you come to a stop. It's not as safe as a tow dolly, but when you can't afford to rent one because you don't have even that much extra money, it works. No it's not a hillbilly stunt, I live right outside of Austin, TX. to the OP... don't let your buddy drive your truck. you drive it, make him to the work in the Miata. just take the corners a little wider, and drive no faster that 30 miles per hour, and turn your hazards on.
The only one I can see is the cops there are fcking dicks. Especially compared to San Antonio. fcking jabronis.
But he lives in Cali so...
